The Technical Writer collaborates closely with subject matter experts to ensure all documentation is clear, concise, technically accurate, and aligned with internal procedures, quality systems, and customer specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Program Management, and other subject matter experts to gather technical information and translate it into clear, user-friendly documentation.
  • Research and collect information from engineering drawings, design specifications, bills of material, assembly procedures, project plans, white papers, test plans, and internal and customer requirements.
  • Prepare, review, revise, and maintain technical documents including operator manuals, work instructions, training manuals, maintenance manuals, technical service bulletins, installation instructions, overhaul and repair instructions, and test procedures.
  • Ensure all documentation is clear, concise, technically accurate, and formatted in accordance with company and customer standards.
  • Use photographs, drawings, diagrams, charts, and other visual aids to improve end-user understanding of products, assemblies, and processes.
  • Maintain document revision history, version control, and records in accordance with document control requirements and quality procedures.
  • Review and update existing documentation to reflect engineering changes, process improvements, and updated customer or regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, process reviews, and cross-functional meetings, capturing notes, action items, and follow-up items as needed.
  • Support product transition from design to production by ensuring technical documentation is complete, accurate, and released on schedule.
  • Assist with audit support, customer deliverables, and other documentation-related projects as assigned.
  • Apply document control and revision management practices consistent with AS9100 and ISO 9001 quality system environments.
  • Support compliance with military and industry standards and customer-driven documentation requirements where applicable.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in technical documentation writing, including manuals, work instructions, and test procedures, supporting engineering, manufacturing, and product compliance.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering data such as drawings, specifications, bills of material, planning documents, and test requirements.
  • Strong document control and revision management skills in an AS9100 and ISO 9001 quality system environment, ensuring accuracy, traceability, and version control.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel for authoring, formatting, and managing technical documents.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical information in a clear, organized, and user-friendly manner.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with limited supervision in a fast-paced production or engineering environment.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and subject matter experts, ideally within aerospace or defense settings.
  • 3 to 5+ years of experience in testing, validation, or engineering within an aerospace or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience performing functional, environmental, or qualification testing, with the ability to incorporate test results into technical documentation.
  • Ability to work in an ITAR-controlled environment as required by program needs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing and engineering documentation in a production environment.
  • Desirable familiarity with AS9100 and ISO 9001 quality systems and related audit requirements.
  • Knowledge of document control, revision control, and technical documentation best practices.
  • Experience in aerospace, including exposure to flight-critical components and assemblies, is highly beneficial.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, and bills of material.
  • Proficiency with MS Project, CAD tools, SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat, or graphic tools is a plus.
  • Experience using visual aids such as photographs, diagrams, and charts to enhance technical content.

  • Comfort working with cross-functional teams in a structured, quality-driven environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when managing document versions, histories, and approvals.
