SUMMARY
 
This part-time offsite contract Technical Training Specialist position will provide support and assistance to the Substation Operator Technical Apprentice Coordinator, a federal corporate position, by validating that Substation Operator Apprentice Training Program Correspondence lessons are received, graded, recorded and returned to the Apprentice Coordinator, and ultimately back to the student in a timely manner. Apprentice Program lessons cover a wide variety of routine to complex tasks addressing a myriad of operational and emergency responsibilities encountered by multiple corporate disciplines, such as Operators, Power Control System (PSC) and System Protection and Control (SPC) craftsmen, linemen, electricians, etc. This position requires extensive knowledge of the operations of a large wholesale utility and the variety of tasks required within an Extra High Voltage (EHV) power transmission substation to ensure safe, reliable service, including High/Low voltage switching and tagging on transmission lines and within an EHV substation; removing / restoring complex relaying systems; removing and restoring inputs / outputs to Remedial Action Schemes (with significant potential impact to grid stability); High Voltage (HV) AC and HVDC power system Interties; and, more. Training material has been defined and published. This position will use their experience and expertise to review lessons submitted on behalf of corporate apprentices to correct / provide additional information for possible use by the federal Substation Operator Technical Apprentice Coordinator in the further development of apprentices and the Substation Operator Technical apprenticeship program
 
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Provide in-depth, complex technical expertise, support and assistance to the Substation Operator Technical Apprenticeship Program and program Apprentice Coordinator by:
    • Receiving submitted apprentice lessons directly from the federal Technical Training Substation Operator Apprentice Coordinator.
    • Reviewing and correcting lessons based on utility expertise and experience; provide written technical feedback within each lesson
    • Copying and returning reviewed and corrected lessons to the student’s federal Apprentice Coordinator who will review, return and discuss with the student(s) as appropriate.
    • Developing / running reports and maintaining incidental records associated with the apprentice lessons within applicable corporate system, site, or database. (Report structure to be specified in conjunction with divisional staff.)
    • Providing feedback/recommendations on the program’s academic performance to the federal program Apprentice Coordinator. This should include identification of any areas of potential deficiency in training materials.
    • Reviewing and recommending edits and revisions to documents and training materials as needed to update and maintain a current and successful training program
 Education & Experience 
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education or Training, Instructional Design, or Instructional Design and Technology is preferred. 
  • 5 years of experience providing technical training support in electrical transmission systems environment is required
 Required Skills & Experience 
  •  Completion of a Substation Operator Apprentice Program.
  • 5+ years of experience with basic MS Office Computer programs.
  • 5+ years of experience of High/Low voltage switching and tagging in an Extreme High Voltage (EHV) power transmission substation and on transmission lines.
  • 5+ years of understanding and facilitating Safety Operations within an EHV power transmission substation.
  • 5+ years of experience of removing / restoring complex relaying systems within an EHV Transmission substation.
  • 5+ years of experience removing and restoring inputs / outputs to Remedial Action Schemes that could impact the electrical system stability of the Western United States.
  • Experience writing switch orders to clear or bypass electrical substation equipment, by using station prints.
  • Experience understanding and interpreting electrical drawings.
  • Experience performing work using and conforming to electrical power system safe working practices.
  • Knowledge of power system generation with emphasis on hydro and fossil fuel.
  • Knowledge of High Voltage AC and HVDC power system Interties.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic equipment and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Knowledge of AC and DC electrical theory with emphasis on extreme High Voltage equipment
 Preferred Skills & Experience 
  •  Possess knowledge sufficient to allow correction of the lessons/material associated with the Substation Operator Apprentice Training Program

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License is required
