Position Description

This position Technical Specialist 2 performs the more complex specialized tasks, inspections, procedures, or computations in support of department maintenance operations. Serves as department expert in a specific technical field. Performs related duties as required.

The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more. Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge.

Typical Duties

  • Reviews service requests from the public and issues work orders county wide and delegates work assignments accordingly.
  • Reviews plans, specifications, and/or materials for projects.
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
  • Studies and reviews field work and makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Stays abreast of project progress and assists with any problems or complaints.
  • Coordinate with other departments and State agencies on matters relating to departmental services & programs.
  • Oversees or participates in monitoring and administration of public service contracts.
  • Oversees or participates in the development of specifications for and designs of new policies, procedures related to area of specialization.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, supplies, and techniques used in road maintenance.
  • Communicates with the public regarding project and/or program progress.
  • Keeps abreast of new trends and/or developments in field of specialization.
  • May require knowledge of OSHA, MUTCD and related safety laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of all federal, state, and/or local laws, regulations and policies affecting area of specialization.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent supplemented by job related technical education as described in the position announcement and six (6) years of responsible experience in area of technical specialty, including two (2) years of increasingly responsible supervisory/lead experience and/or project management experience.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, supplies and techniques used in road maintenance
  • Three or more years of experience in public works/DOT maintenance, construction inspection, infrastructure maintenance, or a related field
  • Knowledge of public works/DOT maintenance operations, construction inspection practices, applicable safety regulations, and infrastructure maintenance standards
  • Reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, engineering drawings, maps, and specifications
  • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems, GIS applications, and Microsoft Office software is preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of all federal, state, and/or local laws, regulations and policies affecting area of specialization
