We are looking for a compassionate, caring, and dedicated Team Leader Coding Specialist to join our team and help us continue our tradition of excellence.
As a Team Leader Coding Specialist, you will play a key role in supporting the daily operations of the Professional Coding team by facilitating training, conducting audits, and providing leadership and guidance to coding staff. This position is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely coding of professional charges, promoting coding compliance, and fostering continuous improvement through education and collaboration.
Job Overview
The Team Leader Coding Specialist is responsible for facilitating training, auditing coding quality, and supporting the daily operations of the Professional Coding team. This role accurately and timely codes professional charges by abstracting information from the electronic medical record and applying appropriate coding guidelines and payer requirements.
This position provides educational feedback to providers to promote accurate documentation and ensure compliance with coding and billing regulations established by government and commercial payers. The Team Leader keeps leadership informed of daily workflow, coding issues, provider concerns, and operational challenges.
For Professional Billing, this position may also provide direct oversight of assigned coding staff, including approving time off, completing performance evaluations, delegating work assignments, and partnering with the Manager on coaching and disciplinary matters, as designated.
What You'll Do
- Accurately assign professional coding from electronic medical record documentation in accordance with coding guidelines and payer requirements.
- Facilitate onboarding, training, and ongoing education for coding staff.
- Conduct coding audits and provide constructive feedback to support coding accuracy and compliance.
- Educate providers on documentation improvement opportunities and coding requirements.
- Monitor daily coding workflows and assist in resolving operational issues.
- Collaborate with leadership to improve coding quality, productivity, and departmental performance.
- Keep the Manager informed of coding trends, workflow concerns, provider issues, and team performance.
- Assist with staff scheduling, time-off approvals, performance evaluations, work assignments, and other supervisory responsibilities, as designated.
- Maintain current knowledge of coding regulations, payer policies, and industry best practices.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Education and Experience
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Five (5) years of professional billing and coding experience.
- Demonstrated professional coding experience and successful completion of internal coding assessments.
- Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and professional coding guidelines.
- Excellent communication, organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree.
- Previous leadership, mentoring, or team lead experience.
- Experience with professional billing workflows and revenue cycle operations.
- Experience with Epic or other electronic health record and professional billing systems.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Associate (CCA) certification required.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel to office locations for training as needed.
