JOB TITLE: Special Education Resource Teacher

REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Special Education Director

UNIT CLASSIFICATION: Sunnyside Education Association

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The primary purpose of this position will be to provide students with instruction to assist those students meet goals as described in their Individual Education Plan.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:

  • Determines specific learning problems, skill deficiencies, or social adjustment difficulties of students and initiates remediation programs in these areas.
  • Supports instruction by providing tutoring for other classes when necessary.
  • Evaluates each student in terms of initial needs and progress toward remediation.
  • Prepares progress reports and year-end evaluations, administering pre-tests and post-tests as appropriate and necessary.
  • Makes available a wide range of teaching materials and equipment.
  • Provides opportunities for students to explore life and career goals.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of individual student behavior.
  • Work closely with other staff including teachers, counselors, and school psychologists to help the students maintain satisfactory class work, homework, and behavior.
  • Meets with parents to keep them apprised of their child's progress.
  • Participates in MDT meetings as necessary.
  • Prepare grades and progress reports.
  • Keep current of new developments in the field of special education by reading journals and publications, attending professional society meeting and seminars, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Daily work will be assigned and supervised by the building principal. Interacts regularly with various support staff, students, parents, and other district employees.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The daily work is performed in an office/classroom setting and at various sites within the district. The job incumbent is often required to: stand or sit for prolonged periods; be exposed to computer display terminal for prolonged periods; and meet externally imposed and inflexible deadlines. The incumbent is sometimes required to: be exposed to infectious diseases; and deal with distraught, angry or hostile individuals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Bachelor Degree in Education required

Valid Washington State teaching certificate with special education endorsement required

Knowledge of state essential academic learning requirements and relevant assessments for reading, writing, and math.

Demonstrates experience, interest, and willingness to work with students in an alternative

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Academic Intervention Specialist

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Academic Intervention Specialist is responsible for instructing identified students that have demonstrated academic difficulties in literacy and math. The work requires a broad understanding and detailed knowledge of effective research based instructional strategies in literacy and math.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:

  • Develop and implement a remediation plan for identified students using assessment data such as pre-assessments, DIBELS, WELPA, and classroom based assessments.
  • Provide targeted instruction to identified students using strategies designed to increase literacy and math achievement.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies and materials that are appropriate for the instructional objectives and the needs and abilities of the students.
  • Monitor and assess student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Assist classroom teachers in the diagnosis of students and collaborates in planning instructional strategies.
  • Assist in the selection of appropriate materials utilized by the classroom teacher for corrective measures.
  • Provide demonstrations of new methods and materials to staff.
  • Maintain an accurate account of literacy/math services provided through individual files/records and data collection.
  • Provide timely progress reports to classroom teachers.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • A portion of time will be spent communicating with Pre-K providers in the community regarding transitions to kindergarten and kindergarten readiness. - (Sun Valley only)
  • Participate in required staff meetings, inservice, and PLC's.
  • Develop and maintain positive and cooperative interactions and communicate with school staff, clients, and the community
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures.

Reports to building principal or designee. Interacts with administrators, teachers, support staff, students and parents.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work is performed primarily indoors with some requirements for outdoor supervision and activities. The individual is required to frequently stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel and crouch. There is occasionally reaching and lifting and carrying of up to 20 pounds.

Bachelor''s degree or higher from an accredited institution in Early Childhood (Sun Valley Elementary) or Elementary Education

Experience with data collection and data analysis preferred.

Experience with Pre-K alignment preferred - (Sun Valley Elementary only)

Experience with implementation of WaKIDS - (Sun Valley Elementary only)

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Washington State Teaching Certification with appropriate endorsement.

Ability to use relevant technology effectively.
