JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct formal and informal assessments to evaluate students' functional vision performance. Analyze and integrate data from multiple sources to determine the impact of visual impairments on accessing the general curriculum and daily functioning. Gather background information on academic, medical, and family history related to the student's visual status.
- Provide individualized instruction to students who are blind or visually impaired, focusing on areas such as Braille, low vision devices, abacus, daily living skills, Nemeth code, and assistive technology. Design and implement instructional strategies, including environmental modifications, material adaptations, and disability-specific methodologies, as outlined in the IEP.
- Provide direct instruction in classroom orientation, school and neighborhood travel, cane techniques, and both indoor and outdoor travel options based on individual student evaluations and their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Teach the use of low vision aids such as canes, mobility devices, and magnifiers, ensuring that students are proficient in utilizing these tools for increased independence. Maintain and manage low vision aides as necessary.
- Collaborate with families, administrators, teachers, and other service professionals to develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) for students, contributing expertise to ensure appropriate goals and services for students with visual impairments.
- Prepare and present reports at IEPs and other team meetings.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to review evaluation results, integrate findings, and develop intervention plans.
- Serve as a resource to parents, school teams, staff, and administrators, providing information on visual impairments, their educational impacts, and current best practices. Support students' education in the least restrictive environment by developing and presenting activities tailored to their needs.
- Analyze caseloads, service requirements per student IEPs, and student locations to develop a schedule of service times for students that is effective and efficient.
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of student records, including IEPs, assessment results, progress reports, and communication logs. Adhere to professional practices, agency policies, and legal requirements concerning student records, confidentiality, and service delivery.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and Agency regulations, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Stay informed about current trends, research, and best practices in special education, including strategies for students who are blind or visually impaired.
- Participate in team meetings and professional learning opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Travel between multiple schools on any given day.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Two years of related experience desired.
- Current Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction license as a Teacher for Visual Impairment and/or Orientation and Mobility.
- Current Driver's License and a means of efficient transportation.
- Understands the specific needs of blind and visually impaired students including assessment, curriculum adaptation, and available technology.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Braille and Nemeth Code.
- Demonstrated proficiency in cane techniques.
- Knowledge of appropriate state and federal laws pertaining to special education.
- Experience in the IEP process.
- Agile, demonstrating a growth mindset by leveraging flexibility, resilience, and change.
- Highly collaborative, working with others to achieve a common goal in a way that promotes representation and participation by all.
