Mulit-Lingual (ESL Teacher) with capacity for role as Department Chair
Position Summary
The teacher is responsible for planning and delivering effective instruction that promotes student learning and achievement aligned with District curriculum, Illinois Learning Standards, and Board of Education policies. Teachers create a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment that supports the academic, social, and emotional development of students while fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and responsible citizenship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and Student Learning
- Plan, prepare, and deliver standards-aligned instruction that meets the diverse learning needs of students.
- Develop and implement instructional strategies that promote active student engagement and critical thinking.
- Establish clear learning objectives and communicate expectations for student performance.
- Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and inform instructional decisions.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students regarding academic performance and growth.
- Differentiate instruction to support varied learning styles, abilities, and needs.
Classroom Environment and Student Support
- Create and maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
- Establish and enforce classroom expectations that promote positive behavior and student responsibility.
- Support the social, emotional, and developmental needs of students.
- Maintain effective classroom management procedures that maximize instructional time.
Curriculum and Instructional Planning
- Implement District curriculum and instructional programs consistent with Board policy and administrative guidelines.
- Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and improvement activities as assigned.
- Integrate technology and other instructional resources to enhance learning.
- Maintain accurate instructional records, lesson plans, and assessment data.
Assessment and Student Progress
- Evaluate student performance through a variety of assessment methods.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and progress.
- Communicate student progress with parents/guardians through.
Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities
- Collaborate with other staff members to improve instructional practices and student outcomes.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning teams, and District professional development activities.
- Maintain professional relationships with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues.
Compliance and Professional Conduct
- Comply with all Board of Education policies, District procedures, and applicable state and federal laws.
- Maintain professional ethics consistent with the Illinois Educator Code of Ethics.
- Safeguard student confidentiality in accordance with legal requirements.
- Perform supervisory duties and other responsibilities as assigned by the principal or designee.
Qualifications
- Hold a valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education with appropriate subject endorsements.
- Meet all state certification and licensure requirements for the assigned teaching position.
- Provide official transcripts of all academic credits earned and submit updated transcripts as required.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily in a classroom and school environment.
- The position may require standing, walking, and moving throughout the classroom for extended periods.
- Occasional lifting of instructional materials or equipment may be required.
- The position may include supervision of students in various school settings including classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and school events.
DEPARTMENT CHAIR
Description:
The department chair serves as the instructional leader and administrative liaison of their department. The department chair leads curriculum development and alignment, supports and mentors department staff, manages instructional resources, and collaborates with administration to improve student learning outcomes. Key responsibilities include facilitating department meetings, evaluating departmental staff, analyzing student performance data to inform instructional decisions, coordinating curriculum alignment with departmentally designed critical learning standards, developing a departmental budget, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the department. Department chairs carry a teaching load as prescribed by the terms of the teacher contract.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Report to the building principal.
- Be a member of the school leadership team.
- Be a member of the district curriculum committee.
- Initiate and facilitate curriculum development in the department.
- Regularly and systematically conduct teacher evaluations
- Collaborate with the principal and curriculum committee on revisions of course objectives and assessments, selection of instructional materials, and all other instructional issues.
- Assign teachers to classes based on certifications and qualifications.
- Assist in providing appropriate staff development programs for department members.
- Oversee testing and assessment programs in the department.
- Maintain accurate supply and equipment inventories.
- Prepare the annual department budget.
- Assist the principal in the selection of professional staff.
- Coordinate technology assistance for department members.
- Review grade distribution reports.
- Assist in the orientation of new staff in the department.
- Assist and be a resource for staff in developing fair academic and behavioral procedures for students.
- Serve as a resource for the principal in matters pertaining to staff, such as: the quality of instruction, level of cooperation, student discipline, and overall academic policy within the department.
- Oversee departmental Professional Learning Teams
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a minimum of three years of teaching experience; possess an endorsement in general administrative, teacher leadership, or principal leadership; or be currently enrolled in a principal preparation or teacher leadership program. Successful candidates must complete the PERA-mandated teacher evaluation training by the start date and are expected to complete their teacher leadership or principal preparation coursework within two years, if applicable. Bilingual applicants preferred.
Terms of Employment
Employment terms, compensation, and work year are established by the Board of Education and the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
