Teacher - Literacy Specialist

Pay: $25.00-$35.00/hour

 

This position is the literacy coach at the elementary school level. Position is at an hourly rate, for part-time hours for 8-9 weeks during the summer plus additional planning and meeting times in the spring and early fall.

Responsibilities

  • Work as a team with the assigned program site to plan for the summer and implement curriculum and literacy strategies.
  • Model best practices for experiential thematic curriculum and literacy strategies including (reading aloud, readingwith children, independent reading, literacy stations and thematic curriculum).
  • Coach program staff to build their capacity to implement these same strategies.
  • Identify resources and literacy materials that link to thematic curriculum and materials that appeal to the age and interests of youth in the program.
  • Organize schedule and space for embedding literacy activities and literacy stations in the daily plan.
  • Conduct a pre- and post- literacy test using DIBELS Oral Fluency to be used for program evaluation, as well as toidentify individuals that need individual or small group skill-building.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Commitment to working with urban, at-risk children, including English language learners, SEI endorsed.
  • Willingness to utilize research-based intervention strategies.
  • Work late June to mid-August for up to 15 hours per week per site, and another 15-20 hours in the spring to attend training and to plan with the program site. Required training to be scheduled prior to beginning of summer program.

Qualifications

  • Someone presently employed as a certified elementary teacher with background in reading instruction, preferred.
