GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Richmond Hospital Education Program (RHEP) is a State Operated Program funded to provide educational services to students hospitalized at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. The RHEP provides in-patient educational services,
serving students in grades PK-12 including post-graduates. The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) teacher will serve as part of an educational team who supports students in accessing their educational program within the hospital setting.
Movement of students by wheelchair is required, including through inclined hallways. The ECSE teacher is responsible for providing daily instruction for patients with complex health and medical needs, including those who depend on mechanical ventilators and tracheostomies. Instruction is adapted to meet the needs of students in an acute care hospital setting at the CHoR - Brook Road campus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides instructional activities in a hospital-based classroom, in patient rooms or
    in hospital common areas.
  • Uses instructional expertise to assist students in learning material presented through differentiation and adaptation using each student's Individualized
    Education Plan (IEP), Virginia's Early Learning & Development Standards
    (ELDS) and the program's approved early childhood curriculum as appropriate.
  • Selects and effectively implements Assistive Technology and Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices (low-tech and high-tech).
  • Provides individual and small group instruction designed to meet the needs of all
    students.
  • Assists with movement of students, equipment, and other mechanical devices as required or directed in the hospital setting.
  • Requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
  • Completes and maintains individual records and reports including daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually as requested or required.
  • Records data in RHEP data management system and exchanges pertinent educational data when needed.
  • Maintains professional and routine communication with administration, colleagues, parents, the student's medical team, and home school division to ensure educational services are provided in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Participates in all required meetings related to the position, students, or facility including staff development, meetings, and in-service opportunities provided by the Hospital Education Program, Children's Hospital of Richmond VCUHS,
    Richmond Public Schools, and the Virginia Department of Education State Operated Programs as required or directed.
  • Provides for professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must have a collegiate or postgraduate professional license or be eligible for a provisional license in Early Childhood Special Education.
  • A minimum of three years working experience as a public school teacher.
  • Experience working with students with multiple disabilities, significant cognitive impairments, and/or complex health and medical needs.
  • Experience with students who rely on mechanical ventilators, tracheostomies, g-tubes and acute care needs preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of current trends and methodologies used to address the needs of children with significant cognitive impairments.
  • Considerable patience and the ability to work effectively with children with disabilities, young adults and faculty members are essential.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of child growth, development and evidence-based instructional procedures and practices.
  • Experience in the implementation of Individualized Education Plans.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, time management and public relations skills are required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, colleagues, and healthcare professionals.
  • Proficiency in computer operations and related software.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, manage multiple assignments simultaneously, and work effectively independently and/or with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions and to perform all required tasks.
  • Must have the ability to instruct and assist in the implementation of functional communication skills, assistive technology, and maintaining student disability records in a highly confidential manner.
  • Bilingual skills to include Spanish are a plus.
  • Experience conducting lessons and assessing student progress, maintaining student discipline in the classroom, meeting with parents to discuss student progress and problem areas preferred.
  • Experience working collaboratively is preferred.
  • Experience providing ongoing academic guidance for students preferred.
