Position: Special Education Teacher Consultant

Effective 2026-2027 School Year

Position Purpose: Under the general supervision of the Special Education Director and Supervisors, Teacher Consultants work to build the capacity of schools to educate students with special needs. This includes providing disability specific support and services, problem solving, crisis prevention and intervention, and technical support. The Teacher Consultant role facilitates student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through student evaluation and implementing district approved curriculum.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

  • Participate in child study/MTSS teams as well as initial evaluations of students suspected of having a disability.
  • Facilitate placement of incoming students with IEPs.
  • Support classroom staff in developing and administering school curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Visit SE classrooms regularly in order to observe, model, and promote evidence-based practices to maximize learning and achievement.
  • Consult with SE administration to monitor and support staff compliance with IDEA/MARSE as well as program growth.
  • Provide instructional coaching to teachers related to analyzing and interpreting assessment data.
  • Provide differentiated professional development to support teacher and administrative needs related to special education.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge and remain current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research related to Special Education.
  • Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record keeping and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensure that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the building.
  • Participate and facilitate Manifestation Determination Review meetings when needed.
  • Coordinate with other professional staff members and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

Additional Duties: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Director of Special Education and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment: Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements: Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding special education and students.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Knowledge of research-based interventions for reading and math.
  • Knowledge of Response to Intervention and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.
  • Knowledge of behavior support strategies.
  • An understanding of a "learning styles" approach to instruction and a respect for students' multiple intelligences.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with staff, families, students, and administration.
  • Ability to lead small and large groups.
  • Must possess the ability to use various types of technology to access and communicate information in the teaching and learning process.
  • Ability to manage fiscal, human, and physical resources.
  • Ability to work in an economically, culturally, and racially diverse environment.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate

  • Endorsement in at least one area of Special Education

  • Masters Degree Required

  • Minimum of 3 years successful teaching with at least 2 of those in a Special Education classroom.

  • Must meet State of Michigan Professional Development requirements.

  • EL certification or experience working with EL students preferred

  • Experience working with high school students with disabilities, transition planning, or vocational rehabilitation.

  • Experience with IEP processes, Kent ISD programs (KCTC), Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS), Kent County community resource networks (Network 180, BSBP, DAKC), and SSI/Guardianship regulations is highly desirable.

  • Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.
