Primary Purpose Help meet physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a self-contained classroom. Assist in implementation of classroom programs including self-help behavior management and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School diploma
  • Certification: Educational Aide certificate
  • Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Experience: At least one 1 year of successful experience as a teacher assistant, substitute teacher, or other comparable work experience preferred.
  • Other: Such other alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration might find appropriate and acceptable.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Support

  • Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Help with inventory care and maintenance of equipment.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Assists the teacher in classroom instructional activities.
  • Assists in administration of teacher made tests.
  • Checks marks and corrects students work according to specific teacher instruction.
  • Performs clerical duties as needed.
  • Assists with supervision of students during field trips and other special activities, lunch, recess, restroom breaks, and bus related times.
  • Works with special education students in the general education classroom as required by IEPs.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding students and their records at all times.
  • Maintains emotional control and models effective coping skills (e.g., calm, low voice, neutral facial expression, non-challenging and non-argumentative interactions with students, polite, precise requests, and quiet requests to teacher for assistance if problems are noted).
  • Attends training as required.
  • Performs other duties as the superintendent may assign.

Student Management

  • Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, or assisting students with personal care such as feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
  • Help manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous students as needed.
  • Assists teacher with implementation of behavior management systems.
  • Assists students in need of special attention including health, hygiene, and feeding as appropriate.
  • Recognize differences in each students special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs and adapt methods and interaction accordingly.
  • Help supervise students throughout the school day inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

Supervisory Responsibilities None.

Customer Care Skills

  • Provide professional communication with students, parents, community members, staff, and other professionals at all times.
  • Use proper phone etiquette at all times, speaking slowly and clearly. Take reliable messages and route to appropriate staff.
  • Ensure superior customer care skills are used via eye contact, facial expressions, voice inflections, body language, and an attitude of "going the extra mile" for others.
  • Ensure all requests for information are dealt with in an appropriate timeframe.
  • Create and maintain a welcoming service-oriented environment toward all students and families.
  • Performs other duties as the superintendent may assign.

Mental Demands

  • Work with frequent interruptions.

Physical Demands

  • Posture: Prolonged sitting, occasional bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse, occasional reaching.

Environment

  • May work prolonged or irregular hours.
