Tape Librarian
Pay Rate: $22-$25 / hr.
Location: Houston, TX
Schedule: Full-Time, Onsite
Contract: 1-year
 
Position Summary
The Tape Librarian is responsible for maintaining and managing the inventory of magnetic computer tapes, NAS devices, and USB disks within the Houston Tape Library. This role supports daily tape library operations, media tracking, inventory management, data verification, and quality control activities while ensuring proper handling and maintenance of all media assets.
 
Key Responsibilities:
Tape Library Operations
  • Serve as the primary resource for projects within the tape library.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for the xmittal program.
  • Coordinate and manage tape pools, including creating, expanding, reducing, and labeling media inventories.
  • Maintain tape library inventories and perform routine maintenance activities.
  • Load and eject media in tape silos using generated lists.
  • Maintain and follow established library procedures and work instructions.
Media Management & Inventory Control
  • Verify all disks and tapes for outgoing client shipments.
  • Register and document all incoming media.
  • Retrieve, file, sort, and organize media for internal users, archives, and warehouses.
  • Retrieve, package, and prepare media for outgoing shipments.
  • Perform quality checks, labeling, and filing of incoming media.
  • Conduct database searches to locate media and coordinate retrieval activities.
  • Search for missing or "not in rack" tapes and communicate findings to management.
Database & Reporting
  • Address media catalog issues for users and archive personnel.
  • Manage media error reporting and document soft and hard media errors within appropriate catalogs.
  • Generate media reports as required by management and IT departments.
  • Coordinate with Computer Operators to support daily tape library and silo operations.
Compliance & Quality
  • Ensure proper care and handling procedures for all computer tapes and media.
  • Follow all Quality Assurance (QA), QHSE, and departmental procedures.
  • Support continuous process improvements and perform additional duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications:
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred
Experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in tape library operations, tape technician roles, computer operations, or data center operations
  • Experience with media inventory management and database systems
  • Experience with tape management systems, preferably MMS
Required Skills
  • Strong understanding of tape library operations and media management processes
  • Knowledge of MMS tape management systems
  • Strong computer and database skills
  • Experience with inventory control, data verification, and reporting
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work effectively under deadlines
  • Strong communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and assist with training backup personnel
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and move up to 20-25 pounds
  • Minimal local travel may be required
