Description
Position Summary
The Switch Driver is responsible for driving the trailers in and out of the yard/warehouse and securing loads of product to prepare the trailers for shipment. They should possess adequate communication skills in order to understand written and spoken instructions, excellent safety awareness and the ability to perform some manual labor. They need to be able to comfortably operate a semi truck with a trailer and must be able to back trailers up to dock doors, often with other trailers on either side of the dock.
Essential Responsibilities
- Drives a tractor trailer or straight truck in a safe manner to staging area for loading.
- Perform inspection of the tractor and trailer per company and DOT policies and regulations.
- Check trailer to assure all product and packing slips are on proper loads.
- Opens and closes curtains and secures loads by ratcheting down straps on trailers to facilitate loading product for transport.
- Communicates any issues with tractor/trailer to Supervisor.
- Follows all safety rules and operates equipment in a safety-conscious manner.
- May assist in duties within the warehouse.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
