Position Summary

The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for leading and executing field survey operations with accuracy, efficiency, and safety. This role requires strong technical knowledge of surveying methods, construction staking, and plan interpretation, along with the ability to supervise and direct survey technicians in the field. The Survey Crew Chief serves as the primary point of contact on site for survey-related activities and works closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure survey work supports project schedules and quality requirements.

The Survey Crew Chief is expected to work independently from tentative through final project phases and to resolve routine field issues without direct supervision. Experience with construction surveying, boundary surveys, topographic surveys, GPS, and machine control is required. Leica machine control experience is strongly preferred.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise a survey crew to perform daily field survey activities.
  • Perform topographic, boundary, and as-built surveys of existing features.
  • Conduct field surveying to obtain data for base plans and construction layout.
  • Perform construction staking for grading, pavement, utilities, airfields, and railroad work.
  • Establish and maintain site control for survey crews and grade checkers.
  • Set up and manage GPS calibration for dozers, graders, and other machine control systems.
  • Calculate working points and layout information as needed.
  • Run levels and verify elevations through site control networks.
  • Operate surveying equipment including Trimble GPS, Trimble Total Station, and Trimble Dini.
  • Utilize and support Leica machine control systems, including pavers and trimmers as required.
  • Maintain, inspect, and calibrate survey equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Plan and organize daily surveying tasks to meet project schedules and priorities.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, engineers, and other survey personnel to complete work efficiently.
  • Keep accurate field notes, records, sketches, and documentation to certify work performed.
  • Provide control lines and elevations required for accurate installation of construction materials.
  • Prepare cross sections and quantity data for progress tracking, cost, or payment purposes.
  • Support topographic and cross-section surveys for planning and quantity verification.
  • Train and mentor survey technicians on field procedures, equipment use, and safety practices.
  • Stay current with required certifications, training, and technical advancements.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related field, or
  • Minimum of 5 years of field survey experience, including leadership or crew oversight
  • Position equivalent to Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level III or IV preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of surveying methods, standards, and proper field practices
  • Ability to read and interpret highway, commercial, and residential construction plans
  • Strong math, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Effective communication skills with supervisors, engineers, clients, and crew members
  • Ability to prioritize workload and coordinate with Survey and Project Managers
  • Proven ability to resolve field issues and adapt to changing site conditions
  • Ability to work extended hours and travel as required by project needs
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and basic computer applications
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to quality and safety

Work Environment

  • Primarily outdoor work with exposure to varying weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Site-specific exposure to hazards requiring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Noise levels vary by site and may require hearing protection.
  • Out-of-town and overnight travel may be required based on company workload.
