Survey Crew Chief

As a Survey Crew Chief for Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC) in our Charlotte, NC office, you'll lead and participate in field survey operations supporting a variety of projects, including boundary surveys, ALTA/ACSM Land Title surveys, topographic surveys, route surveys, and construction stakeout. You'll work both independently and with crew members under the direction of a Registered Professional Surveyor, ensuring accurate data collection and efficient field execution. You'll operate survey equipment such as robotic total stations and GPS receivers, while maintaining detailed field notes, managing equipment, and upholding safety standards across all activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead field survey crews in the execution of boundary, ALTA/ACSM, topographic, route, and construction surveys
  • Operate and maintain survey equipment, including robotic total stations and GPS receivers
  • Collect accurate field data, including measurements, notes, and sketches, to support survey deliverables
  • Ensure efficient daily field operations, including task planning, crew coordination, and adherence to project requirements
  • Maintain and inspect survey equipment and vehicles to ensure proper working condition
  • Follow and promote health and safety standards and standard operating procedures in all field activities
  • Coordinate with project managers, surveyors, and office staff to support project completion

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience as a survey crew chief or in a similar field leadership role
  • Proficiency operating GPS survey equipment, robotic total stations, and electronic data collectors
  • Knowledge of land surveying principles, techniques, and standard field practices
  • Experience interpreting construction plans, specifications, and boundary documentation
  • Familiarity with computer-aided drafting concepts and survey data workflows
  • Understanding of construction layout procedures and civil engineering fundamentals
  • Knowledge of industry safety standards and field safety practices
  • Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record

Preferred Capabilities:

  • Experience working on ALTA/ACSM Land Title surveys and complex boundary determinations
  • Familiarity with survey data processing or CAD software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Experience training or mentoring junior field staff
  • Strong coordination skills when working with multi-disciplinary project teams
  • Experience supporting construction stakeout for commercial or infrastructure projects
