Surgical Technologist Certified Cardiac Team - St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital

Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Surgical Tech Certified Cardiac Team assists surgeons and nurses with patients, equipment preparation, aseptic technique, and gathering patient and case specific supplies and equipment. The Surgical Tech Certified Cardiac Team will prepare the operating room surgery by assembling routine supplies, materials, instruments, and equipment, and will obtain special supplies indicated by physician. The Surgical Tech Certified Cardiac Team also sets up and operates a variety of specialized instrumentation, manual and powered equipment.

Essential Job Functions

Functions as the scrub person and assists as trained during operative and other invasive procedures by assembling supplies and equipment required for the procedure. Prepares and organizes sterile supplies and instruments for the procedure and performs surgical counts with the circulating RN. Maintains an organized sterile field and ensures the sterility of the field by taking corrective action as needed. Assists with placement of sterile drapes. Provides instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure and maintains aseptic technique. Retrieves and collects specimens and labels specimens. Reports any implanted devices, catheters, drains, and packing to circulator. Provides complete case preparation. Provides complete case preparation and knows, with the ability to adapt, of special instruments, supplies, and equipment needs for patient populations. Demonstrates knowledge of patients rights and responsibilities according to the patients age and understanding. Demonstrates understanding of patients Advance Directives. Assists in CPR as needed. Assists with pre and post procedure cleaning of the operative or invasive procedure room and necessary instruments. Monitors instrument sets during surgeries and reports to cardiac coordinator for repair or replacement needs. Provides clinical instruction, direction and in-service training to department staff and serves as a preceptor. Additional responsibilities may include room sanitation, patient transport/transfer, surgical positioning, establishing, and maintaining sterile fields, equipment, and instrument operation. Completes case setup/room turnover as part of surgical team in an accurate and timely manner. Accessible for "on call" as scheduled and is available within the time frames as indicated by the department. Demonstrates flexibility regarding unit/area staffing and scheduling needs.

Licensing/Certification

BLS Basic Life Support - American Heart Association (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to providing direct patient care) Certified in one of the following (required): Certified Surgical Technologist - The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR Certified Surgical First Assist - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) - required to receive within one year from date of hire or transfer to position

Education

Graduate of accredited surgical technologist program (required) Work Experience

2 years of experience in an operating room (required) Experience in cardiovascular operating room (preferred)

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
