The Smithsonian Institution-the world's largest museum, education, and research complex-is seeking a collaborative, innovative veterinary pathologist to join the National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI).

In this leadership role, you will contribute to the health and conservation of some of the planet's most remarkable species-working at the intersection of zoo medicine, pathology, and conservation science. This is an opportunity to apply your expertise to meaningful, real-world conservation challenges while supporting a diverse zoological collection that includes rare and endangered animals.

What You'll Do

As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will:

  • Lead a comprehensive diagnostic pathology program supporting a diverse animal collection
  • Partner with veterinarians, animal care professionals, and researchers to improve health outcomes and conservation success
  • Identify and investigate emerging disease trends and population health concerns
  • Advance and standardize diagnostic protocols and best practices in zoological pathology
  • Contribute to research, publication, and scientific collaboration that advances wildlife health
  • Supervise and mentor staff while fostering a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous learning

Experience Required

Who We're Looking For: We welcome candidates who bring a blend of technical expertise, curiosity, and a passion for conservation. Required: DVM/VMD (or equivalent) Completion of an anatomic pathology residency with board eligibility or certification (ACVP or equivalent) Professional experience applying pathology to disease investigation, prevention, and research [usajobs.gov] Strongly Preferred: Experience with zoological, wildlife, or exotic species Record of scientific contributions (publications, presentations, collaborative research) Demonstrated leadership or interest in program development and team mentorship Work Environment & Impact: This role offers a dynamic and hands-on environment where no two days are the same. You may work with species ranging from small reptiles to large mammals, in settings that include labs, clinics, and animal habitats. This position requires adaptability, sound judgment, and a commitment to safety, as work may involve potentially hazardous animals, zoonotic risks, and varied environmental conditions.
