Job Overview - Supervisor Indirect Tax - 34306

Our client is seeking an experienced indirect tax professional to lead U.S. non-income tax compliance, tax technology, audit management, and process improvement initiatives. This role serves as a key business partner across finance, accounting, customer operations, IT, and business leadership to ensure accurate tax determination, reporting, compliance, and risk management.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise in sales and use tax, property tax, tax systems, and compliance with the leadership skills necessary to drive operational excellence, mentor team members, and support strategic business initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all sales and use tax compliance activities across U.S. legal entities, ensuring timely and accurate filing of returns and related tax payments.
  • Oversee annual tax rate compliance reviews and taxability analyses across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Monitor and maintain tax system configurations to ensure accurate tax calculation, accruals, and reporting.
  • Manage legal entity compliance reviews to ensure adherence to applicable indirect tax regulations.
  • Support tax planning opportunities while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements.
  • Serve as the functional lead for indirect tax technology platforms including Vertex, OneSource, TaxWare, SAP S/4HANA, and related systems.
  • Partner with IT and business stakeholders to evaluate and implement system enhancements impacting tax determination and reporting.
  • Identify, develop, and implement automation and process improvement opportunities that increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
  • Participate in and lead tax-related projects, system implementations, process redesigns, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead state and local tax audits, managing information requests, audit defense strategies, and resolution activities.
  • Evaluate tax exposure risks and ensure appropriate controls are in place to mitigate compliance risks.
  • Collaborate with external advisors and tax authorities to resolve complex tax matters.
  • Provide indirect tax guidance and support to accounting, finance, customer care, operations, procurement, and business leadership teams.
  • Partner with customer-facing teams to address taxability questions, exemption certificate management, billing inquiries, and tax disputes.
  • Work directly with customers and external parties to secure and maintain valid tax exemption documentation.
  • Support initiatives to identify, obtain, and monitor available sales, use, and property tax incentives.
  • Supervise and develop indirect tax team members through coaching, performance management, training, and career development.
  • Establish team objectives, performance expectations, and development plans.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and ensure the team remains current on changes in tax legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in indirect tax, tax operations, accounting, finance, or related disciplines.
  • Strong knowledge of sales and use tax compliance, audit management, and indirect tax regulations.
  • Experience with tax technology platforms such as Vertex, OneSource, TaxWare, SAP S/4HANA, or similar systems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects, process improvement initiatives, and cross-functional teams.
  • Advanced analytical and technology skills, including experience with tools such as Power BI, Alteryx, VBA, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred

  • CPA designation.
  • Public accounting or audit experience.
  • Experience implementing or enhancing tax engines and tax technology solutions.
  • Experience with SAP, PeopleSoft, or other enterprise ERP systems.
