Overview
Job Summary
The Supervisor-Coding I is responsible for leading a team of professional coders to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant coding of medical records for billing and reporting purposes. This role is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the coding department. This role focuses on optimizing revenue cycle performance while minimizing claim denials within the nonprofit healthcare system. The position requires strong collaboration with clinical teams, compliance, and revenue cycle departments to maintain high standards of documentation and coding integrity. This position is under the general direction of the Coding Manager and System Director, Professional Coding Services.
Job Responsibilities
- Creating and implementing policies that ensure accuracy of coding.
- Overseeing the staff of the coding department
- Managing work queues and staff workflows
- Communicating with coders and reviewing policy changes for payers.
- Analyzing work queues and working with Manager on trends causing denials or other issues.
- Managing staff performance by providing regular feedback, performance reviews, and one-on-one meetings
- Train new staff along with the coding manager.
- Work with the coding manager on staff production and quality.
- Train staff on any performance issues.
- Participating in internal and external audits while supporting revenue cycle and compliance initiatives.
- Ensuring departmental adherence to HIPAA, CMS, ICD-10, CPT, and other regulatory standards.
- Completes assigned goals.
Minimum Required Experience
Minimum of three years leadership or supervisory and coding inpatient and outpatient (ancillary, emergency department, outpatient surgery, etc.) records utilizing ICD and CPT experience in an acute care facility.
Preferred/Desired Experience
Experience coding GI, General Surgery, Vascular, wound care, infectious disease, pulmonary, etc. preferred.
Minimum Required Education
CPC and Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Thorough working knowledge of ICD coding, CPT coding, and DRG methodology.
Preferred/Desired Education
Associate Degree or equivalent combination of experience.
Minimum Required Licensure
CPC and CCS
