Summary

The Outpatient Coding Supervisor provides oversight and direction for the activities of the Outpatient Coding team of the Health Information Management Department to meet the quality, utilization, and financial needs of the organization. Ensures compliant, complete, and accurate outpatient coding processes and program for optimal reimbursement. Ensures compliant and comprehensive coding processes and program for accurate reporting of clinical information. Mentors, supports, and trains team members for career development and advancement opportunities.

Qualifications

Required

• Minimum of one of the following credentials:

o AHIMA RHIA

o AHIMA RHIT

o AHIMA CCS

o AHIMA CCS-P

o AAPC CPC

• Three (3) years of hospital coding experience.

Preferred

• One (1) year of leadership experience.
• Associate's degree in Health Information Technology.
• Bachelor's degree in Health Information Administration.
• Experience with Epic

Essential Functions

• Supervise the schedule and day-to-day operations of all coding and the staff performing these functions.
• Interpret and use data to manage the operations of coding. Pursue and implements best practices using both internal and external resources. Formulate strategies and implements process improvement to sustain the overall efficiency and proficiency of coding.
• Research appropriate reference materials to obtain and keep abreast of current regulatory information, guidance, and requirements.
• Serve as the outpatient-coding resource for patient financial services, patient access. Interact with Medical Staff, Quality, Case Management, Utilization Review, and Administration, and refers issues to HIM Manager.
• Coordinate with Patient Financial Services. Investigate RAC and all other denials and provide input into the denial appeals process.
• Conducts both regular and ad-hoc coding audits in order to identify commons errors, potential areas in need of improvement or education.
• Ensure outpatient-coding practices are following established hospital policies, State and Federal Regulations, CMS and CHIQ.
• • Coordinate information system software updates for coding use.
• Complete performance evaluations for all outpatient-coding staff. Facilitate the hiring, orientation, training, and retention of the qualified coders. . Follows appropriate employee disciplinary plan of action.
• Takes and active role in project or process implementation and monitors staff compliance and achievement of related goals. Assist with special projects as needed.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) to ensure compliant and optimal APC assignments.
• In-depth knowledge of Health system related computer systems.
• Assists the Health Information Manager in identifying and setting short and long term goals, program objectives and tasks to meet the mission and vision of the medical center. Monitor Productivity and accuracy of all coding staff for maintaining industry standards.
