Superintendent, Maintenance & Quarry

POSITION SUMMARY

Leads, manages and is accountable for the repair and preventive maintenance program at Maui Maintenance Shop and operations of the Maui Quarry. This position is also responsible for Maui site safety training and regulatory compliance program, including the proper handling/disposal of environmentally sensitive materials.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Quarry Operations:

• Plans, schedules, and directs operations of mining pit and manufacturing plant processing of all quarry products produced by the department.
• Is responsible for coordinating inventory of finished products with delivery requirements.
• Assures product compliance with specifications through inspection of equipment settings and wear tolerances.
• Reviews the operating condition of all quarry pit and plant equipment and schedules maintenance, servicing, and repair activities as required. Is responsible for the safe operation of all manufacturing activities conducted on quarry premises and the safe conduct of quarry personnel. Ensures compliance with government regulation.
• Helps to develop the Quarry's annual operating budget.
• Leads, manages and is accountable for the performance of hourly employees. Enforces company policies, procedures and house rules. Ensures compliance with provisions of the bargaining unit agreement.

Maintenance Operations:

• Plans, coordinates, and leads the maintenance and preventative maintenance routines in the repair and service of all facilities, mobile and plant equipment assigned to each location.
• Inspects equipment condition, reviews equipment performance records, and prescribes required maintenance and repair procedures. Monitors a comprehensive preventive maintenance and lubrication program for all departmental equipment.
• Directs and coordinates completion of departmental capital project assignments (AFE's).
• Directs and supervises the purchasing function to assure timely and cost effective receipt of parts and materials. Provides information support required for equipment history, cost and service record keeping. Provides labor and material cost estimates for major repair projects or new installations as required.
• Prepares and maintains work order and equipment history files. Directs the daily activities of the Buyer/Maintenance Clerk in the accomplishment of these responsibilities. Assures that necessary records are kept as required by company policy.
• Develops preliminary shop operating budgets for the review and approval of the department manager. Maintains forecast of anticipated major repair expenses on all major assets.
• Is responsible for fuel and lubricant inventory and assures adequate parts inventory for anticipated repairs.
• Maintains knowledge of specific procedures for handling environmentally sensitive materials and issues. Ensures compliance with company policy as well as State and Federal regulations
• Under the direction and coordination with HC&D's Safety and Environmental Departments, provides safe working conditions by ensuring compliance with company and department safety policies and by enforcing all State and Federal rules and regulations. Organizes and executes site-specific OSHA and MSHA related activities and safety training program. Maintains updated records and files for regulatory compliance with safety, environmental, and legal reporting requirements such as MSHA, OSHA, NPDES, Waste Management, Safety equipment inspections, and Material Safety Data Sheets.
