Superintendent Facilities Electrical & High Voltage

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for leading, directing, and coordinating all facility-wide electrical engineering, maintenance, and high voltage systems activities. The Superintendent will ensure the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of all electrical assets while driving continuous improvement, capital execution, and technical excellence across the plant.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Provide strong leadership to all electrical engineering, maintenance, high voltage, instrumentation, and crane electrical teams across the facility.
• Develop and sustain a world-class safety culture by ensuring strict adherence to all SSAB safety policies, electrical safety standards, and regulatory requirements; proactively identify and mitigate hazards.
• Lead, coach, and develop managers, supervisors, engineers, and hourly personnel to foster teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Oversee the maintenance, reliability, and engineering of all electrical systems, including high voltage distribution, substations, power systems, automation, and plant-wide electrical infrastructure.
• Ensure effective troubleshooting and root cause analysis of electrical and operational issues; lead teams to implement sustainable corrective actions.
• Establish and drive reliability-centered maintenance strategies for critical electrical assets to improve uptime and reduce lifecycle costs.
• Plan, prioritize, and manage major electrical maintenance outages and ensure safe, efficient execution.
• Lead the development, justification, and execution of capital projects related to electrical infrastructure, modernization, and reliability improvements.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, energy efficiency, and cost optimization.
• Develop and manage departmental budgets, including operating and capital expenditures.
• Monitor, analyze, and report key performance indicators (KPI's) related to safety, equipment reliability, costs, and project performance.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, mechanical maintenance, engineering, and leadership teams to support overall plant performance objectives.
• Serve as the technical authority for electrical systems, including compliance with applicable electrical codes, standards, and best practices.
• Assist in strategic planning and long-term asset management for facility electrical systems.

QUALIFICATIONS

Competencies and Experience

Required:

• 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering and/or maintenance in heavy industrial environments (steel industry strongly preferred).
• 5+ years of leadership experience managing maintenance, engineering, or technical teams.
• Strong knowledge of high voltage systems, power distribution, industrial electrical systems, and automation.
• Proven experience managing medium to large-scale capital projects and contractors.
• Demonstrated ability in troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and reliability improvement.
• Proficiency with CMMS systems and Microsoft Office Suite (including MS Project or equivalent).
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and drive results.

Preferred:

• 15+ years of experience within steel or similar heavy industry.
• Experience with energy management and power optimization.
• Six Sigma or Lean manufacturing training.

Education

Required:

• Bachelors degree in Business Administration, Management, Engineering or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
• Master's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or related field.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES / DIRECT REPORTS

This position has overall leadership responsibility for facility electrical operations, including salaried and hourly personnel.

Direct reports may include:

• Manager, Electrical Maintenance
• Manager, High Voltage / Power Systems
• Electrical Engineering Manager / Lead Engineers
• Electrical Reliability or Automation Engineers
• Project Engineers

(Total team size dependent on facility structure; typically includes multiple salaried leaders and hourly crews.)

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee will frequently be required to:

• This position operates in an office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment. The ability to walk, bend, kneel or stand, use of hands to finger, hold and handle.
• This position will often require work in the industrial environment with exposure to heat/cold, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, noise and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards.

The employee will occasionally be required to:

• Drive or travel by airplane
• Lift, push, or carry materials up to 50 pounds
• Work at heights or in confined spaces
• Work around energized electrical equipment and high voltage systems
• Use of required PPE and safety equipment at all times

The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

• Vision at near, mid, and far range

POSITION TYPE - WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

• Position is full time, exempt
• Day shift, Monday through Friday, with additional hours as required for outages, emergencies, and project execution
• Travel for this position is expected to be less than 10% of time in the field or at other SSAB locations
