Position Overview:
The Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technical Lead is responsible for managing all technical aspects of the the firm’s SUE practice. In this position, you’ll lead utility exploration and designation and test hole efforts, oversee Level B and Level A investigations, and establish consistent standards for SUE delivery in accordance with ASCE 38-22.
You’ll play a key role in developing internal SUE workflows, managing field and office coordination, and ensuring utility data is collected, interpreted, and delivered with a high level of technical accuracy. This role also includes oversight of project performance, including budgets, schedules, productivity, QA/QC, and team development.
What You’ll Do:
Lead SUE projects from kickoff through completion, including scope development, scheduling, field coordination, and deliverable management.
Direct Level B utility designation using electromagnetic locating, GPR, and related geophysical methods.
Plan and oversee Level A test hole investigations using vacuum excavation methods such as hydrovac or air vac.
Review utility records, available survey information, and client-provided data to establish field investigation plans.
Coordinate with survey staff to ensure proper horizontal and vertical control of utility data and test hole information.
Provide QA/QC of SUE deliverables, including utility sketches, test hole reports, and composite utility mapping.
Interpret conflicting subsurface information and reconcile field findings with available records and design needs.
Manage project budgets, schedules, and staffing to support efficient and accurate delivery.
Serve as the primary technical contact for clients, design teams, survey teams, and utility owners.
Develop internal SOPs, templates, checklists, and workflows for SUE services.
Train and mentor staff involved in utility locating, designation, and vacuum excavation.
Support proposals, fee development, and scope writing for SUE services.
Maintain awareness of safety requirements, utility locating best practices, and evolving SUE standards.
Requirements
5+ years of progressively responsible experience in SUE, utility locating, or related subsurface utility work.
Experience with Level B utility designation and Level A test hole investigations.
Working knowledge of ASCE 38-22 and quality levels D through A.
Hands-on experience with EM locating equipment and GPR interpretation.
Experience with vacuum excavation operations and utility exposure documentation.
Understanding of utility records research, field verification, and deliverable preparation.
Ability to manage multiple projects and field crews simultaneously.
Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Valid driver’s license.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with CAD, survey coordination, or GIS workflows.
