Job Description
Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District seeks per diem substitute teachers. A substitute teacher is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Substitute teachers will work effectively with the school administration and other teachers to minimize any potential transition problems from the teacher to substitute and substitute to teacher.
• Substitute teachers must implement teacher lesson plans, assign student class homework, and maintain classroom control and discipline. • Substitute teachers must also complete a daily report or evaluation to communicate any pertinent information resulting from the days events.
Reports to school office at the beginning and end of school day to pick up/drop off required materials, schedule of classes. Follows sign in and out procedures as determined by the principal. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and involvement of the students.
Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for each predetermined lesson. Employs instructional methods and materials that are deemed the most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives. Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straightens chairs, tables, clears chalkboard, etc.
Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures, indicating to students at the beginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in accordance with school and district policies. Ensures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom. May perform duties usually required of absent teacher such as lunchroom duty and hall monitoring.
Knows emergency evacuation routes for the assigned classrooms and executes them according to school policy in the event of an emergency drill or an actual emergency. Knows and executes procedures for referring students who are disciplinary problems. Maintains reasonable rules of conduct that encourage self-discipline and responsibility. Maintains a professional and positive rapport with others. Knows and executes school safety procedures. Maintains strict confidentiality concerning student records.
Performs other related duties as directed by principal.
While performing the duties of the job, the substitute teacher is frequently required to stand, talk, walk, and sit for long periods of time. The substitute is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students. A substitute needs to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the parents, students, and other staff.

The Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District is located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on the North Shore of Boston, MA. The District consists of five schools which are located in the towns of Hamilton and Wenham, MA, with a total enrollment of 1954 students.
