Substation, Testing & Commissioning Engineer (Engineer I, II, or III)
Salary Range: $75,000 – $160,000 (Depending on Experience)

Multiple Texas Locations

A leading Texas electric transmission and distribution utility is seeking Substation, Testing & Commissioning Engineers at the Engineer I, Engineer II, or Engineer III level to support substation engineering, testing, commissioning, and field execution activities.

Final location and position level will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and business needs.

Position Overview
  • Open to Engineer I, Engineer II, or Engineer III candidates
  • Level, responsibilities, and compensation aligned to experience
  • Combination of office and field work with direct exposure to substations and high?voltage equipment

Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Substation, Testing & Commissioning Engineer plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates engineering work supporting substation projects, equipment testing, and commissioning activities. Responsibilities increase in scope and complexity with experience level.

Core Responsibilities Engineer I / II / III (all levels)
  • Support substation testing, commissioning, and engineering activities
  • Perform or assist with performance, cost, and schedule evaluations for assigned projects
  • Apply standard engineering techniques, practices, and procedures to operational needs
  • Review and interpret engineering documentation, drawings, and specifications
  • Communicate engineering ideas, recommendations, and findings to internal stakeholders
  • Provide technical support to field crews, contractors, and internal teams
  • Participate in the development or improvement of engineering standards
  • Work safely around energized and de?energized high?voltage facilities (up to 345kV)
Engineer III (advanced scope)
  • Manage engineering aspects of projects of moderate scope or phases of larger projects
  • Lead studies and evaluations requiring independent engineering judgment
  • Provide ongoing technical direction and coordination to contractors and personnel
  • Represent the organization in varied and complex engineering matters

Core Competencies
  • Knowledge of power systems including generation, transmission, and distribution
  • Ability to apply engineering principles, economic analysis, and decision?making techniques
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, ASME, etc.)
  • Ability to translate electrical theory into practical utility applications
  • Comfortable working in and around high?voltage electrical equipment
  • Strong problem?solving skills, initiative, and teamwork

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET?accredited institution

Experience Requirements (Based on Level)

  • Engineer I:
    • Entry?level to early?career engineer; relevant internships or co?ops a plus

  • Engineer II:
    • Bachelor’s degree plus 2+ years of engineering experience
    • OR 1+ year with FE/EIT certification
    • OR 1+ year with a Master’s degree

  • Engineer III:
    • Bachelor’s degree plus 4+ years of engineering experience
    • OR 3+ years with FE/EIT certification
    • OR 3+ years with a Master’s degree

Preferred Certifications & Licenses
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE/EIT) certification preferred
  • Valid driver’s license meeting company requirements

Computer Skills
  • Proficiency with electrical engineering design and analysis software
  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database tools

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Combination of office and field work (majority office?based)
  • Exposure to substations, high?voltage facilities, and construction environments
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb, bend, and work at heights
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

Compliance & Background Requirements
  • Position may be subject to NERC CIP cybersecurity standards
  • Successful completion of background checks and personnel risk assessment required
  • Cybersecurity training required prior to access and annually thereafter
  • Credit check may be required depending on location and role
