Position Summary

The Student Success Mentor (SSM) supports the academic, social-emotional, and attendance success of identified students through consistent mentoring, data-informed interventions, and strong family engagement. This role is grounded in the Community Schools strategy and focuses on removing barriers to student success while building positive, trusting relationships. The SSM serves as an advocate, motivator, and connector for students, helping them stay engaged in school and on track for achievement. Research highlights that mentors play a critical role in building confidence, motivation, and long-term student success outcomes .

Key Responsibilities

Student Mentoring & Support

  • Provide consistent one-on-one and small group mentoring focused on attendance, behavior, and academic progress
  • Build positive, trusting relationships that support student engagement and goal-setting
  • Serve as a role model, encouraging persistence, confidence, and personal responsibility
  • Monitor student progress and adjust supports based on individual needs

Attendance & Data Monitoring

  • Utilize attendance and school data to identify and support students at risk of chronic absenteeism
  • Track student attendance and engagement daily/weekly and implement targeted interventions
  • Collaborate with school teams to develop and monitor student success plans
  • Recognize and celebrate student progress and milestones

Family & Community Engagement

  • Conduct outreach to families to strengthen home-school connections and support student success
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding attendance, progress, and available supports
  • Connect students and families to school and community-based resources and services

Collaboration & School Support

  • Work collaboratively with school counselors, administrators, teachers, PPWs, and Community School Coordinators
  • Participate in attendance teams, student support teams, and intervention meetings
  • Assist in planning and facilitating after school programming, student engagement activities, mentoring groups, and family events
  • Support implementation of school-wide initiatives aligned to student success and engagement

Program Implementation & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records of mentoring sessions, outreach efforts, and student progress
  • Assist with program evaluation, data collection, and reporting outcomes
  • Participate in professional learning related to mentoring, attendance, and student support strategies

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education, social work, counseling, or related field preferred
  • Experience working with youth in school or community-based settings
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to analyze data and implement targeted interventions
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, cultural responsiveness, and student-centered practices

Work Environment, Schedule, and Salary

The Student Success Mentor works within the school setting during the instructional day and may participate in after-school or community-based activities to support students and families. This position works 11 months, 7.25 hours per day (36.25 hours per week). The work day is based on the school hours, with flexible scheduling for out of school time and programming.

This position is paid on Lane E of the Support II Salary Scale, with a range of $45,208 - $68,137.
