Description

The goal of this project is to gain hands-on experience in marine animal husbandry and science communication. The intern will work closely with our marine lab team to care for a diverse collection of marine species and contribute to developing educational materials (videos, posters, social media, presentations, etc.) that highlight our lab's research and conservation efforts.

Examples of Duties

  • Aquarium Husbandry - assist with daily care of marine animals, including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring tank systems. Conduct weekly water quality testing and observe animals.
  • Participate in the setup and maintenance of aquaria, life support systems, and exhibit spaces.
  • Outreach and development - collaborate with staff to create engaging outreach materials, assist in the development of public education programs, research and communicate complex scientific information in a way that is accessible to diverse audiences.

Students can receive course credit as an internship through the Office of Career and Engagement.

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Previous experience with aquarium husbandry
  • Knowledge of basic marine fish and invertebrate biology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a marine lab through classes and/or research
  • Desired but not required - scuba certified, experience with boating and trailering, experience engaging with the public, knowledge of local ecosystems or marine conservation issues, experience with graphic design, photography, video
