Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Student Athletics Creative Content Assistant supports the Director of Creative Content in producing and organizing digital content for Lake Superior State University Athletics department. Responsibilities may include photographing and recording athletic events, creating basic social media graphics and short-form videos, writing draft captions, organizing digital assets, assisting with content scheduling, and providing independent coverage of assigned sports and department activities.

The student will work from assignments, deadlines, brand standards, and creative direction established by the Director of Creative Content. This position does not independently manage departmental social media accounts, approve content, speak on behalf of the University, or publish content without authorization.

Typical duties include:

  • Capture photo and vertical video content at assigned practices, games, camps, and department events.
  • Edit basic photos, graphics, and short-form videos for digital use.
  • Draft captions and content ideas for review.
  • Upload, label, sort, and archive photo and video files.
  • Assist with recurring graphics, score updates, promotional content, and student-athlete features.
  • Maintain accurate schedules and meet assigned production deadlines.
  • Follow Laker Athletics branding, NCAA regulations, University policies, and music and media-usage requirements.
  • Protect confidential or unreleased information.
  • Perform other related creative-content duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled Lake Superior State University student in good academic and conduct standing.
  • Basic experience creating content with a phone, camera, or editing software.
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms, particularly Instagram.
  • Ability to follow instructions, meet deadlines, and communicate professionally.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work independently after receiving an assignment.
  • Availability for some evenings and weekends based on the athletics schedule.
  • Reliable attendance and transportation to assigned on-campus locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coursework or experience in communication, marketing, graphic design, photography, video production, journalism, or a related field.
  • Experience photographing or filming sports, events, or fast-moving subjects.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, Canva, or similar programs.
  • Experience creating vertical videos, social graphics, or photo carousels.
  • Familiarity with basic camera operation, composition, exposure, audio, and file management.
  • Understanding of collegiate athletics, Lake State branding, or sports social media.
  • Ability to write clear, accurate, and engaging social media copy.
  • A portfolio or examples of previous creative work.

Physical Demands:

This position requires extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, and computer use. The employee may be required to move throughout athletic venues, work near active competition areas, climb stairs, bend or kneel while capturing content, and carry camera or production equipment weighing approximately 25 pounds.

Work may occur indoors or outdoors and may involve loud environments, crowds, cold temperatures, ice-rink conditions, changing weather, and evening or weekend hours. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for qualified individuals.

Work Hours: 

Work hours will vary based on assigned sports, athletic event schedules, departmental priorities, academic availability, and available funding. Student employees will typically work approximately 8–12 hours per week, with the ability to work up to the University maximum of 19 hours during higher-volume periods with prior supervisor approval. Evening and weekend availability is required for some assignments.

Schedules may include athletic event coverage, scheduled editing or production blocks, staff meetings, training, and other approved department work. Individual schedules and responsibilities may differ based on each employee’s assigned coverage area and skill set. All hours must be scheduled or approved in advance by the Director of Creative Content. Employees may not work beyond their assigned schedule or exceed 19 hours in a workweek without prior authorization. Hours are not guaranteed and may fluctuate throughout the academic year.
