Job Title: Structural EngineerJob Description

This senior-level Structural Engineer role focuses on the design and execution of complex commercial projects across the United States, including K-12 schools, corporate buildings, healthcare facilities, higher education buildings, retail developments, government facilities, and aviation projects. You will lead structural evaluations, develop innovative structural solutions, and coordinate closely with multi-disciplinary teams from concept through construction. The role offers the opportunity to take professional responsible charge of projects, ensure that all designs meet rigorous safety and performance standards, and provide technical leadership within a collaborative, technology-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Apply advanced and diversified structural engineering principles and practices to complex assignments, exercising independent judgment in resolving engineering problems, selecting appropriate methods, and developing innovative design solutions.
  • Serve as Lead Project Engineer when applicable, assuming responsibility for signed and sealed documents and work performed under professional responsible charge in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Represent the firm in client meetings and project discussions to resolve technical issues, define project scope, coordinate activities, communicate project progress, and ensure client satisfaction.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and direct medium to large projects or multiple smaller complex projects, maintaining responsibility for scope, budget, schedule, quality control, risk identification, and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Review and approve major structural materials, equipment, manufacturer qualifications, and field construction activities to ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable codes.
  • Serve as a technical specialist, advisor, or consultant within your discipline, applying highly specialized knowledge and advanced techniques to guide project decisions and solve complex structural challenges.
  • Work with limited supervision, receiving guidance primarily on overall objectives, critical issues, policy matters, and unusual challenges while independently managing day-to-day technical tasks.
  • Lead, supervise, coordinate, mentor, and review the work of engineers, designers, and other team members assigned to projects, ensuring quality deliverables and professional growth within the team.
  • Define and organize project work into manageable tasks, assign responsibilities, and communicate potential scope changes and impacts to project managers and supervisors in a timely manner.
  • Maintain professional licensure and meet continuing education requirements, staying current with evolving codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Participate in business development activities, including supporting proposals, contributing to client presentations, and helping to strengthen and maintain client relationships.
  • Support construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and coordinating with contractors to address field issues.
  • Engage in BIM coordination efforts, collaborating with architects and other disciplines to ensure accurate and coordinated structural models.
  • Travel as required for project and client needs and maintain a valid driver's license, except where waived for international assignments.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering that qualifies for professional licensure in the state of practice.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, or active progress toward PE licensure.
  • At least eight or more years of relevant structural engineering experience through a combination of education, certifications, registrations, and industry practice.
  • For candidates without PE registration, either a minimum of eleven years of related professional experience or equivalent senior-level engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting commercial building projects in markets such as healthcare, education, government, higher education, retail, and aviation.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software, including RISA and RISA 3D, for steel and concrete design and structural modeling.
  • Strong understanding of applicable building codes and standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI, and other relevant design criteria.
  • Experience in structural engineering and structural design for commercial buildings, including steel design and concrete design.
  • Working knowledge of Revit and its application in structural design projects, including model development and coordination.
  • Experience as an Engineer of Record or in roles with professional responsible charge for structural design deliverables.
  • Proven ability to lead structural project efforts, acting as a Structural Project Manager or Lead Project Engineer on complex assignments.
  • Excellent client-facing communication skills, with the ability to lead technical discussions and collaborate effectively with architects, contractors, owners, and other project stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate across multiple disciplines, manage design reviews, and oversee change control processes on complex projects.
  • Strong skills in construction administration, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and supporting field coordination.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision while managing multiple priorities and project deadlines.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working on K-12 schools, corporate buildings, retail facilities, healthcare facilities, higher education buildings, government facilities, and aviation projects.
  • Familiarity with BIM coordination processes and best practices for multi-disciplinary model integration.
  • Experience with design-build project delivery and collaboration with design-build teams.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam for reviewing, marking up, and coordinating structural documents.
  • Experience reviewing and approving major materials and equipment, including evaluating manufacturer qualifications.
  • Prior experience serving as a technical specialist, advisor, or consultant within a structural engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop junior engineers and designers, providing guidance and quality review of their work.
  • Strong organizational skills for defining project work into manageable tasks and tracking scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Interest in business development, client relationship management, and contributing to proposal efforts.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and staying current with emerging structural technologies and design approaches.

Work Environment

You will work within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary AEC environment that combines the opportunities of a large firm with the close-knit, supportive culture often found in smaller organizations. Project teams leverage advanced structural analysis tools such as RISA and RISA 3D, as well as Revit and BIM platforms, to deliver coordinated structural designs for complex commercial buildings. The role involves regular interaction with architects, engineers from other disciplines, contractors, and owners, with a strong emphasis on communication, coordination, and client service. You will have access to modern technology and digital collaboration tools, including platforms such as Bluebeam, to support efficient design reviews and documentation. The organization promotes an employee-centric culture that values healthy work-life balance, flexible working arrangements where feasible, direct access to leadership at all levels, and a mindset of continuous learning and professional growth. Many employees enjoy long tenure, reflecting a stable and supportive workplace. Travel may be required for client meetings, site visits, and project coordination, and you will be expected to maintain a valid driver's license for such activities, except where waived for international assignments.
