Job Title: Structural Engineer - On Site

Job Description

This entry to mid-level Structural Engineer position supports field engineering activities for the installation of a new service water system at a nuclear power facility. The role focuses on construction and outage support, providing hands-on experience in structural engineering, field problem-solving, and coordination with plant personnel and craft labor. You will work closely with an experienced leadership team, offering strong mentorship and professional development in the nuclear power sector.

Responsibilities

  • Support field engineering activities during construction and outage work for a new service water system from the intake structure to the plant.
  • Interface directly with client representatives and plant personnel to ensure clear communication and alignment on project objectives.
  • Coordinate and oversee craft labor, including pipefitters, to support safe and efficient execution of field work.
  • Perform field walkdowns to assess site conditions, verify installation details, and identify construction issues.
  • Resolve construction issues in the field by analyzing conditions, collaborating with stakeholders, and implementing practical solutions.
  • Mark up drawings to reflect field conditions and design changes, ensuring accuracy and clarity for construction teams.
  • Support design revisions through the modification (MOD) process, contributing to updates and improvements in project documentation.
  • Assist with preparation and maintenance of construction documentation, including work packages, reports, and records.
  • Perform engineering calculations using MathCAD to support structural evaluations and design decisions.
  • Work through field-generated problems, applying structural engineering principles to develop effective and safe solutions.
  • Collaborate with the site manager and senior engineer to ensure compliance with project requirements, safety standards, and quality expectations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of field engineering practices by sharing observations and lessons learned from site activities.

Essential Skills

  • Civil engineering degree with structural coursework focus, including steel and concrete design.
  • 2 to 10 years of structural experience in areas such as structural design, structural analysis, and field or construction support.
  • Foundational knowledge of structural engineering principles related to concrete and structural steel.
  • Ability to perform and review engineering calculations using MathCAD.
  • Experience or strong interest in structural engineering within industrial or power plant environments.
  • Capability to interpret and mark up engineering drawings to reflect field conditions and design changes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address field-generated issues and develop practical solutions.
  • Effective communication skills to interface with plant personnel, client representatives, and craft labor.
  • Ability to coordinate and support craft labor, including pipefitters, in an active construction environment.
  • Willingness and ability to commit to a long-term role supporting a nuclear facility.
  • Readiness to complete an initial training period on nuclear processes before transitioning to full onsite responsibilities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with structural design and analysis in concrete and structural steel applications.
  • Background in civil or structural engineering work involving industrial plants or construction sites.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD for reviewing and marking up drawings.
  • Experience with structural engineering tasks such as layout, detailing, and field verification.
  • Interest in building a long-term career in nuclear power and field engineering.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving project needs and work effectively under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing construction documentation and field records.
  • Comfort with learning nuclear-specific processes and procedures during an initial training period.

Work Environment

The role begins with approximately six months of remote or in-office work if located near Naperville, Illinois, or Atlanta, Georgia, followed by a transition to a fully onsite position at a nuclear plant in South Carolina starting in 2027. Once onsite, the standard rotation is four days on site followed by three days off. The majority of work takes place outdoors in an industrial plant environment, requiring comfort with hot weather conditions and active construction sites, including navigating uneven surfaces, equipment, and ongoing field activities. You will work closely with an experienced site manager and senior engineer, benefiting from strong mentorship and a collaborative team culture focused on safety, quality, and professional development. MathCAD is used for engineering calculations, and AutoCAD may be used for drawing review and markups. The environment emphasizes hands-on field engineering, construction support, and long-term project engagement, with support for relocation and per diem provided under the contract terms.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.46 - $62.50/hr.
