Overview / Summary:
The Structural Designer is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering structural design packages for industrial and commercial projects with minimal supervision. This role works closely with engineers, project teams, and clients to develop design solutions, produce construction documents, coordinate across disciplines, and ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards. Depending on project size, the designer may serve as a lead for a building, system, or project area while mentoring junior designers and supporting project planning, scheduling, and execution.
Key Responsibilities:- Develop and coordinate structural designs, models, drawings, details, and construction documents.
- Lead design efforts for assigned systems, buildings, or project areas on larger projects.
- Coordinate with engineers, clients, and other disciplines to resolve design conflicts and ensure project alignment.
- Participate in design reviews, status meetings, and technical discussions.
- Perform field surveys of existing conditions as required.
- Review project specifications and ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and best practices.
- Review the work of junior designers and early-career engineers, providing technical guidance and quality control.
- Assist with engineering calculations under the direction of a project engineer, as needed.
- Prepare labor estimates, support project planning, and help identify scope, schedule, and budget impacts.
- Review submittals and respond to design and coordination requests throughout the project lifecycle.
Primary Qualifications:- Extensive experience designing and drafting structural systems using Revit and AutoCAD.
- Proficiency reviewing models with Navisworks and Bluebeam.
- Strong understanding of structural design principles, industry codes, standards, and best practices.
- Ability to independently develop technical solutions and evaluate design alternatives.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary projects and resolving design conflicts.
- Ability to serve as a lead designer for systems or project areas.
- Strong understanding of project scope, scheduling, budgeting, and estimating.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience leading and mentoring junior designers and engineers.
- Experience performing field surveys of existing facilities.
- Familiarity with engineering calculations and supporting engineering analysis.
- Experience supporting proposals, client presentations, and construction-phase documentation.
- Experience working on both small standalone projects and large, multidisciplinary projects.
