Job Summary

Located in the thriving city of Hillsboro, OR, this role offers a dynamic environment for designers to develop ownership of their designs. Designers at this level may work independently on smaller projects, collaborating directly with engineers to identify project goals, perform code research, discuss system requirements, and coordinate with various trades. On larger projects, the designer may lead the design of a system, a building, or specific systems, overseeing the work of intermediate and entry-level designers. With experience in the subject area and a working knowledge of required systems, designers at this level are expected to ensure high accuracy in their designs and those of their team.

Responsibilities

  • Create, coordinate, and publish project deliverables, including drawings, details, models, and documentation.
  • Perform design development under the guidance of senior designers and engineers.
  • Act independently to move projects forward with minimal supervision.
  • Review the work of entry and intermediate-level designers and early-career engineers for accuracy and completeness.
  • Provide technical guidance to designers and engineers where appropriate.
  • Demonstrate creativity and drive to solve problems while meeting deadlines.
  • Assist with engineering calculations under the guidance of a project engineer as needed.

Qualifications

General Tasks Performed:

  • Plan and conduct work requiring judgment, creativity, and coordination in the layout and design of structural systems.
  • Participate in design approach discussions and propose solutions.
  • Prepare deliverables for all project phases, including models, plans, elevations, sections, schedules, and details.
  • Attend and participate in design status updates in discipline meetings as needed.
  • Review and adhere to specifications in developing and delivering quality designs, providing input and comments where appropriate.
  • Coordinate designs and deliverables, resolving conflicts with and between disciplines and existing field conditions.
  • Conduct field surveys of existing conditions.
  • Respond to design, coordination, conflict resolution, and information-sharing requests promptly.
  • Provide labor estimates for proposed tasks.
  • Review and process submittal documents.

Skills:

  • Deep knowledge of required discipline subject areas and familiarity with other disciplines.
  • Solid understanding of how work affects scope, schedule, and budget, with the ability to identify scope creep early.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve technical problems by identifying options, evaluating pros and cons, and presenting findings.
  • Ability to determine the correct path forward by asking pertinent questions and seeking clarity.
  • Understanding of industry best practices.
  • Ability to provide leadership to junior staff while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Working knowledge of codes and standards.
  • Ability to break down a project into tasks, assign hours, and provide work estimates.
  • Extensive modeling and drafting experience utilizing Revit and AutoCAD or other necessary programs.
  • Extensive model review experience utilizing Navisworks and Bluebeam.
  • Ability to perform as an area or system lead designer.
  • Thorough understanding of discipline requirements.
