Structural Design Technician

Our client is seeking an experienced Structural Design Technician to join their growing engineering team in Hillsboro, Oregon. This is an excellent contract-to-hire opportunity for a motivated design professional with strong structural design and BIM experience who enjoys collaborating on complex industrial and commercial projects.
In this role, you'll take ownership of structural design assignments, working closely with engineers, project teams, and clients to develop high-quality construction documents. You'll play a key role in coordinating multidisciplinary designs while mentoring junior designers and helping ensure project success from concept through construction.
Position Summary
As a Structural Design Technician, you'll work with increasing independence on projects ranging from small standalone assignments to large, complex facilities. Depending on project requirements, you may serve as the lead designer for a structural system, building, or project area while coordinating the work of other designers.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience producing structural design documentation, performing quality reviews, coordinating with multiple disciplines, and utilizing industry-leading design software.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop structural designs with minimal supervision while collaborating closely with project engineers.
- Create, coordinate, and publish project deliverables including:
- Construction drawings
- Structural models
- Plans
- Elevations
- Sections
- Details
- Schedules
- Construction documentation
- Participate in design development and recommend effective technical solutions.
- Research applicable building codes and industry standards.
- Coordinate structural systems with architectural, mechanical, electrical, piping, and other disciplines.
- Identify and resolve design conflicts before construction.
- Conduct field investigations and verify existing site conditions.
- Review project specifications and ensure compliance throughout the design process.
- Assist engineers with engineering calculations when appropriate.
- Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and coordination sessions.
- Prepare labor estimates for assigned work.
- Review and process contractor submittals and related documentation.
- Review the work of junior designers and early-career engineers for accuracy and completeness.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members.
- Maintain high-quality standards while meeting project schedules and deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Drafting, Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Several years of structural design and drafting experience supporting engineering projects.
- Strong experience creating structural construction documents.
- Advanced proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD.
- Experience utilizing Navisworks and Bluebeam for model review and coordination.
- Thorough understanding of structural design principles and construction documentation.
- Working knowledge of applicable building codes and industry standards.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary projects.
- Ability to interpret engineering sketches, drawings, specifications, and design criteria.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within project teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting industrial, semiconductor, manufacturing, commercial, or high-tech facility projects.
- Experience leading structural design efforts for systems, buildings, or project areas.
- BIM coordination experience on large multidisciplinary projects.
- Experience mentoring or reviewing the work of junior designers.
- Familiarity with field verification and existing conditions documentation.
