GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision, the Equipment Operator Trainee III position involves manual work in the performance of various tasks and projects to improve drainage and flood control within Abilene. This position requires work experience in the safe and efficient operation and minor servicing of construction and maintenance equipment. This is a preparatory position to prepare the Stormwater employee for increased responsibility in the field of drainage operations. On-the-job training to prepare the individual for this position is anticipated and will be conducted at the Stormwater Maintenance Supervisors discretion.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position exercises no supervision.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Equipment Operator Trainee I:

• Performs operation and maintenance of creeks drainageways and other stormwater infrastructure using skid steers vacuum trailers boom trucks and other related equipment. • Conducts street sweeping operations and applies herbicides using street sweepers in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines. • Operates agricultural-type tractor mowers equipped with shredder mower decks and/or zero-turn mowers. • Operates pickup and utility vehicles as well as dump trucks ranging from 3 to 16 cubic yards and water trucks. • Uses chain saws pole saws wood shredders and line trimmers to perform maintenance activities. • Participates in concrete repair and rehabilitation projects including the installation of new concrete drainageways. • Maintains creek beds using a variety of light and small equipment including hand tools as required for general operations and maintenance. • Performs minor preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and promptly reports mechanical issues or other operational concerns. • Provides on-call support and responds to after-hours emergency situations when necessary.

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II

Duties and equipment use as listed under Equipment Operator I. Perform advanced operation and maintenance assignments using the following equipment: • Boom • Crane Truck • Wheel Loader • Skid Steer • Tracked Excavator

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • General operation and servicing of light construction equipment and hand tools.
  • Work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.
  • Skill to use, operate, and care for a variety of tools, machinery, and equipment used in the area of work assigned.
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle and associated equipment.
  • Ability to perform minor equipment maintenance repairs.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Make minor operating adjustments and recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through Equipment Operator Trainee Experience.

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I EXPERIENCE

Previous work experience in the safe and efficient operation and minor servicing of light and medium construction and maintenance equipment is required.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

A valid Class B Texas Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment is required.

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of work experience in the safe and efficient operation and minor servicing of light and medium construction and maintenance equipment as outlined in the Important and Essential Duties is required.

WORKING KNOWLEDGE

Working knowledge of maintenance operations performed in creeks and drainage structures, including:

  • Shooting grade
  • Cutting to grade
  • Setting forms and working concrete
  • Basic welding skills

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

A Non-Commercial Herbicide Applicator License from the Texas Department of Agriculture is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
