Position Summary

Participate in the construction, maintenance and repair of the Citys storm drainage system; clean storm drainage structures and sites of dirt and debris, operate light to heavy general maintenance and storm sewer cleaning equipment, and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

This is a Training and Certification Program position.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Perform general labor pertaining to the installation, replacement, maintenance, repair and cleaning of storm drainage structures including arroyos, drainage easements, dams, detention basins, storm sewer inlets and storm lift stations.
  • Utilize construction trades tools, equipment and materials to construct, repair and patch storm drainage system structures including arroyos, drainage easements, dams, detention basins, storm sewer inlets and storm lift stations.
  • Load and unload dirt, debris, maintenance materials and equipment at various job sites as required; clean and maintain maintenance facilities and sites.
  • Perform general clean-up of the Citys storm drainage system; conduct earth moving operations to remove accumulations of soil and other obstructions from the system; clean City storm sewer system using specialized sewer cleaning apparatus and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of small to heavy equipment and tools including, but not limited to, truck and trailers, backhoe, loaders, graders, concrete saws, jackhammers, chain saws, tampers, spray equipment and concrete tools.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all equipment; monitor gauges and fluid levels prior to and during operation of equipment.
  • Learn to read, interpret and follow construction blueprint plans, sketches, City zone atlas and blue stake color markings.
  • Learn to construct and repair storm drainage systems in compliance with maintenance and construction standards and specifications.
  • Maintain supplies, materials and equipment necessary for completion of projects.
  • Perform all work in accordance with construction codes, traffic and safety rules and City ordinances.
  • Drive vehicles and operate medium to heavy trucks with trailer-in-tow 26,000 GVW or above, to transport equipment, materials and tools to and from job site; haul accumulated soil from arroyos to appropriate land fills.
  • Perform traffic control duties to ensure the safety of the work site and to facilitate smooth flow of traffic around the work site.
  • Assist in filling out the work order with data required for the management information system including input of information regarding tasks assigned and performed and materials and equipment used.
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Use radio procedures to communicate with field and base to coordinate and complete tasks.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with snow removal and de-icing of City streets as assigned.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Work in and around confined spaces and cramped conditions.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

High school diploma or GED; and

One (1) year of general construction, landscaping, and/or maintenance experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Drivers License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a valid City Operators Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Possession of a valid Class A CDL within six (6) months from date of hire

Must successfully complete the Storm Drainage Worker Training and Certification Program Level II within the Program timeframe.

Must meet all Storm Drainage Worker Training and Certification Program Level II requirements within the Program timeframe.

Working Conditions

Environmental:

Field and construction site environment; travel from site to site; work around construction equipment; work or inspect underground; exposure noise, dust, fumes and inclement weather conditions.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate to heavy lifting; bending, stooping, kneeling and crawling; walking and standing for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
