Position Summary
This role plays a critical role in supporting the surgical services team by ensuring that medical instruments, equipment, and supplies are properly cleaned, sterilized, assembled, and distributed for patient care. Working under the direction of the Nurse Manager, Core Charge RN, and Core Supervisor, this position helps maintain a safe, efficient, and compliant perioperative environment while supporting high-quality patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform sterilization processing for surgical instruments, medical devices, and equipment according to established policies and infection control standards.
- Clean, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, and distribute surgical instrumentation for operating room procedures.
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot sterilization equipment, including autoclaves, washer disinfectors, and ultrasonic cleaners.
- Maintain accurate sterilization documentation and tracking using multiple computerized systems.
- Manage inventory of sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels and proper storage.
- Prepare and deliver medical and surgical supplies to support operating room procedures.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and proper assembly before sterilization.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory standards, hospital policies, and infection prevention protocols.
- Adapt effectively to changing priorities and the fast-paced demands of the perioperative environment.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with clinical staff while providing excellent internal customer service.
Required Qualifications
- Experience in sterilization processing and surgical instrumentation handling.
- Experience operating autoclaves, washer disinfectors, and ultrasonic cleaning equipment.
- Strong inventory management skills.
- Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations in a perioperative setting.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact in a direct, articulate, empathetic, patient-centered, and customer-focused manner.
- Ability to lift and carry 25 pounds or more frequently and perform occasional work above shoulder level.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience handling and sterilizing surgical, medical, or dental instrumentation within the past four years; or
- Vocational certification as a Central Service Technician or Patient Care Assistant obtained within the past two years; or
- Two years of recent experience as a Central Service Technician or Patient Care Assistant in an acute care setting within the past five years.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Experience working in an acute care hospital environment.
