JOB SUMMARY

The Sterile Processing Technician HSS is responsible for inventory management, distribution, receiving, and sterile processing of instruments and equipment. They are responsible for the case cart room in the maintenance of sterile products and accurately pulling cases based on doctors preference cards. The Sterile Processing Technician HSS provides support for the ORs by providing transport of patients, positioning assistance, room turnover, and cleaning and stocking of supplies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Understands and follows department policies and procedures, acts as preceptor for staff. • Uses PPE (Personal protective equipment) such as impervious gown, face shield, and gloves appropriate to the department. • Appropriately runs washer/decontaminator, loads of instruments correctly, and operates properly and records load properly. • Appropriately uses Sonic Cleaner and compressed air. • Receives contaminated instruments and equipment, disassembles instruments, mechanical cleaning, hand washing of instruments, micro instruments, and rubber goods. • Knowledge of instrument trays to be able to sort instruments into specific sets in all specialties. • Ability to determine instrumentation that is heat-fluid sensitive that needs to be hand cleaned and dried. • Follows all manufacturers Instructions for Use (IFU) in instrument management. • Understands and knows how to use the dryer unit. • Assembling instruments serves as a resource to staff for specialty trays. Identifies and inspects instruments. • Use of count sheets to assemble sets. • Utensil Preparation for all specialties. Understands methods of wrapping and packaging pouch, packaging dating items, and paper wrapping in a fashion to ensure contents are not compromised. • Knowledge of types of sterilizers and how they function and clean each of the following: • Steam Sterrad and Steris System 1. • Knowledge of sterilization parameters, including proper use of load control books, how to read the results, and documentation validates parameters met with the following steam tape, gas tape, internal steam integrators, Sterrad integrators. • Knowledge of Biological Indicators, including proper placement in sterilizer, quality control incubation, and reading the results, documentation, and validation of process for the following: • Steam Biological indicators • Sterrad Biological indicators • Immediate Use Steam Sterilization Biological indicators • Steris System 1 Biological indicators • Physician preferences and location of supplies. Reconcile cards to special procedure. • Knowledge of medical terminology and surgical case types in all specialties. • Takes initiative and volunteers to help others prepare, end of shift report, and supervise staff. • Identifies opportunities to reduce waste and expense. • Demonstrates the ability to multi-task. • Demonstrates proper thorough and timely cleaning of suites between cases with expected turnover timelines. Restores furniture to proper position. • Cleans specialized surgical equipment before and after procedures following the manufacturers guidelines. • Cleans Physiologic monitoring equipment and return to ready state for next patient. • Always applies principles of standard precautions. Safely solidifies and disposes of blood and other bio-waste after each procedure. • Maintains and stocks supplies and equipment replenishing both on an ongoing basis throughout the assigned shift in a fast-effective manner, including IV fluids. • Delivers urine, blood, sputum, and stool specimens to the lab as directed. • Responds timely to all requests and communicates appropriately. • Demonstrates the ability to recognize and perform emergency measures, including CPR when indicated. • Demonstrates and maintains annual competencies. • Assists staff with patient positioning and transfers. Correctly identifies patients by armband and reports delays in transport immediately to Charge Nurse. • Responds promptly to all pages from peri-operative areas. Running errands to other departments in a timely manner. • Housekeeping duties to maintain cleanliness and order of the department. • Returns equipment to appropriate area after use. • Cleans and maintains patient stretchers and beds as needed. • Utilizes free time to wipe down equipment and keeps hallways clear. • Meets and exceeds expectations of the patients and all other customers we serve.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum of High School or GED required. • Successful completion of a Surgical Tech or Sterile Processing Tech training program. • OR Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) from CBSPD Program. • OR Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association. • OR Minimum of 2 years of applicable experience in a sterile processing department and obtaining CSPDT or CRCST within one year of hire. • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. • Intermediate computer knowledge, using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
