Reports To: Executive Director of Technology and Innovation

Terms of Employment: Permanent, 12 Month Position

Nature of Work

The District STEM Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and modeling inquiry-based learning strategies (STEM, project-based learning) with Pre-K through 12th grade teachers. Primary responsibilities include program instruction, curriculum development and revision, and materials management. They also support and mentor STEM facilitators at individual schools.

Qualifications and Licensure

  • Current North Carolina licensure and at least five years of successful full-time teaching experience
  • Master's Degree, 077 - Instructional Technology Facilitator Licensure or STEM related certification (preferred)
  • Demonstrate an enthusiastic interest in and background knowledge of instructional best practices to support the integration of inquiry-based strategies into instruction
  • Provide evidence of significant participation and implementation in research-based professional growth opportunities
  • Experience in working with multiple grade levels incorporating differentiated and personalized instruction
  • Current knowledge of NC Digital Learning Competencies and effective implementation strategies
  • Knowledgeable in the North Carolina Standards for elementary and secondary education
  • Knowledgeable in the integration of STEM/project-based learning to prepare students for college and career readiness

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists and collaborates with content area teachers to review and develop instructional plans to integrate transdisciplinary STEM related activities and experiences.
  • Collaborates with digital teaching and learning specialists in the development and implementation of STEM/project-based learning activities and training programs
  • Develops and presents ongoing professional development for teachers during and after the school day.
  • Works collaboratively with the elementary and secondary district curriculum coordinators.
  • Assists schools with the hiring process of school level STEM facilitators.
  • Assists with district instructional purchases for STEM labs including materials, equipment, furniture.
  • Assists in the preparation of STEM related grant applications for schools.
  • Assists in maintaining and ensuring a consistent, rigorous and equitable educational experience across all schools in STEM subject areas.
  • Supports schools interested in pursuing NC STEM School of Distinction
  • Leads and facilitates district and school level STEM and Robotics programs
  • Assists in planning district and school based STEM family engagement events
  • Adheres to the guidelines of confidentiality as outlined in federal and state laws and School Board Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains a clean, neat appearance, appropriate to the position.
  • Complies with all district and school policies and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting.
  • Work has standard vision requirements.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic)

Special Requirements (if applicable)

  • Must hold or have the ability to attain a current valid teaching license.
  • Demonstrate an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
