The Structural & Miscellaneous Steel Estimator plays a key role in developing accurate and competitive estimates for steel fabrication and erection projects. This position requires leading estimates with limited supervision, focusing on structural steel and miscellaneous metals (stairs, rails, embeds, etc.). In this role, you will collaborate with preconstruction, detailing, fabrication, and field teams to ensure complete scope coverage, competitive pricing, and successful project pursuits.
Job Responsibilities:
Estimate Development
- Structural steel (beams, columns, bracing)
- Miscellaneous metals (stairs, handrails, ladders, embeds)
- Develop estimates including:
- Material costs (based on tonnage and market pricing)
- Fabrication labor and shop operations
- Erection labor, equipment, and crane requirements
- Compile complete estimates and support final proposal submission
Assists with the appropriate resources to determine the project specific tax and insurance requirements
Work with project team or contractor to understand project schedule
Assist in developing and leading Estimate Plan meetings
Steel-Specific Responsibilities
Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination
- Solicit and evaluate quotes from:
- Steel suppliers and service centers
- Coating/galvanizing vendors
- Erection subcontractors (if applicable)
- Buy out items (Joist, Deck, Grating, ETC.)
Post-Bid & Project Support
Education & Years of Experience:
Bachelor of Science Degree in accredited construction related curriculum, such as Civil Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent plus 2 to 4 years of experience; or 7 years of relevant experience in the construction industry.
To thrive in this role, you'll need:
Proficiency with Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and estimating software (Fabtrol, Tekla EPM – preferred but not required)
Ability to read and interpret project documents including drawings and specifications; as well as basic connection details and shop drawings
Working knowledge of Steel fabrication processes, erection means and methods, and industry standards (AISC, AWS)
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines
Effective communication and coordination skills
Problem-solving and analytical thinking
Growth mindset with desire to advance into Senior Estimator role

While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, and arm, hand and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application/form information.
