A day in this role
As our Standby Generator Installation and Field Service Technician, you’ll start your morning reviewing work orders, loading parts, and heading to residential or commercial sites. You’ll install new standby systems, commission them to factory specifications, and verify performance. In the afternoon you may perform scheduled maintenance, run load bank tests, and troubleshoot transfer switches, control panels, batteries, fuel systems, and engine components. Throughout the day, you’ll interpret wiring diagrams, capture accurate service notes, and communicate clearly with customers about findings and recommendations—all while maintaining strict OSHA and electrical safety practices and caring for your company vehicle, tools, and equipment.

Core responsibilities
- Install residential and commercial standby generator systems and perform commissioning to verify proper operation.
- Execute preventive maintenance and scheduled service visits.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues on generator sets.
- Troubleshoot automatic transfer switches (ATS), control panels, batteries, fuel delivery, and engine components.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams.
- Perform startup procedures and load bank testing to validate performance.
- Document work thoroughly with accurate service records and work orders.
- Adhere to OSHA and electrical safety standards on every job.
- Communicate professionally with customers and provide clear maintenance and repair recommendations.
- Maintain company vehicle, tools, and test equipment in top condition.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of generator installation or repair experience preferred.
- Generac experience or certification strongly preferred.
- Experience with Kohler, Cummins, Briggs & Stratton, or Caterpillar generator products is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of residential and commercial electrical systems.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot engine and electrical control systems.
- Familiarity with ATS operation and integration.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and blueprints.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to pass background check and drug screening.
Preferred certifications
- Generac Certified Technician
- Generac Certified Installer
- Electrical License (if applicable)
- EPA Certification (preferred but not required)
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
Physical requirements
- Lift up to 75 pounds.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Climb ladders and work in confined spaces as needed.
- Stand, bend, kneel, and walk for extended periods.
