What you'll do...

Walmart Health & Wellness Technology is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to drive modernization initiatives across our pharmacy technology landscape. This role will be pivotal in architecting, designing, and implementing scalable, resilient, and cost-efficient solutions that support our mission to deliver innovative healthcare experiences for millions of customers.

About Team:

Our team works closely with our US stores and eCommerce business to better serve customers by empowering team members, stores, and merchants with technological innovation. From groceries and entertainment to sporting goods and crafts, Walmart U.S. offers an extensive selection that our customers value, whether they shop online at Walmart.com, through one of our mobile apps, or in-store. Focus areas include customers, stores and employees, in-store service, merchant tools, merchant data science, and search and personalization.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the technical design and modernization of pharmacy platforms, leveraging modern capabilities, tools, and methodologies to deliver high-velocity, agile solutions.
  • Architect distributed systems with a focus on resilience, compliance, efficiency, and observability by default.
  • Drive adoption of best-of-breed cloud and managed database offerings (e.g., Azure SQL, Postgres SQL, Cosmos DB, Cassandra, Spanner) to ensure scalability and reduce operational burden.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to harmonize and process large-scale data in real-time, supporting actionable insights and analytics for pharmacy operations.
  • Champion developer productivity by utilizing centralized developer portals, self-service tools, and standardized CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ensure all modern platform components comply with audit and regulatory requirements and are secure by default.
  • Optimize application performance and resolve production issues
  • Mentor engineering teams on modern system design, distributed architecture, and cloud-native development patterns.

What you'll bring:

  • Proven expertise in modern technology stacks, distributed systems, and system design for large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Experience with managed cloud database solutions (Azure SQL, Postgres SQL, Cosmos DB, Cassandra, Spanner) and migration strategies.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud-native architectures, microservices, and containerization (Kubernetes, OneOps).
  • Strong problem-solving and performance optimization skills
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, developer portals, and self-service engineering tools.
  • Ability to design for compliance, security, and operational excellence in regulated healthcare environments.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills; ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor engineers.

Bentonville, Arkansas US-09158: The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00 - $220,000.00

Sunnyvale, California US-11349: The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :

We are seeking a visionary Staff Engineer (X5) to lead the technical strategy and execution for our next-generation pharmacy solutions.

What you'll bring

  • 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a proven track record architecting and delivering large-scale, mission-critical systems in enterprise environments.
  • Deep expertise in designing and building cloud-native applications, especially on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Microsoft Azure, leveraging services such as Spanner DB, Pub/Sub, and Kubernetes.
  • Advanced proficiency in Java backend development, including modern frameworks (Spring Boot, Micronaut, etc.), RESTful APIs, gRPC and asynchronous processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive product delivery end-to-end: from ideation and requirements gathering, through architecture, implementation, deployment, and ongoing optimization.
