HP Tuners is currently seeking a full-time Staff Hardware Engineer to join our team in Buffalo Grove, IL. At HP Tuners, we develop hardware and software products to suite the aftermarket needs of automotive enthusiasts. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in hardware design and development, with a proven track record of taking projects from concept to production. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams.This is an on-site position and requires the candidate to work in our Buffalo Grove, IL office (relocation assistance is available).ResponsibilitiesDevelop innovative full system embedded architecture for new productsLead the design and development of hardware projects from concept through productionTake into consideration and balance functional requirements, maintainability, reusability, scalability, extensibility, and cost effectivenessCollaborate with cross-functional teams including software, mechanical, and sourcing to ensure seamless integration of hardware solutionsPerform schematic entry and layout using Altium DesignerPrepare PCB projects for manufacturingPrototype and test new hardware designsDebug and validate electronic circuitsParticipate in the board bring‑up process by working side‑by‑side with the firmware teamBeing able to write proof‑of‑concept firmware applications is a plusMentor and provide technical guidance to fellow hardware engineersDevelop detailed design specifications, schematics, and documentationWork with suppliers to source components and finished assembliesManage project requirements and deadlines; work with the Project Management team on creating and maintaining project schedulesDevelop and break down functional requirements into well‑defined tasksPerform peer design reviewsProvide expert technical input into product planning and conceptsFurther knowledge of new development processes in the field and leverage new advancements when appropriateConduct technical research and studies into new technologies, providing recommendations to engineering managementQualifications and Skills10+ years of hands‑on experience and a proven track record in hardware development10+ years of PCB design experience using ECAD tools (Altium Designer or similar)5+ years of hands‑on PCB layout experience, of which at least 3 years were within the last 10 yearsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experienceProven track record of technical leadershipDemonstration of a successful track record in managing complex problems and providing innovative solutionsExtensive circuit prototyping experienceCircuit testing and debugging skillsCircuit simulation experienceExperience with advanced PCB design skills such as impedance control and length matchingFriendly, flexible, and a team playerExcellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work autonomously while meeting required deadlinesGood problem‑solving skillsOpen‑minded, positive approach to problem solving and working with othersProven experience working in a fast‑paced environment to agreed upon timelinesDemonstration of excellent judgment and decision‑making abilitiesRelevant ExperienceExperience designing microcontroller/microprocessor‑based systemsExperience taking a project from concept all the way to productionAbility to diagnose issues that may span hardware, firmware, and system softwareExperience with instrumentation like oscilloscopes, logic/protocol analyzers for debugging embedded systems at HW levelExperience with automotive OBD‑II On‑Board Diagnostics and Vehicle Communication protocols is a plusPhysical RequirementsWorking conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and work at a desk or workbench for prolonged periods of time.Salary and BenefitsAt HP Tuners LLC, we understand that compensation plays a key role when considering a new opportunity. The estimated base salary range for this position is $140,000 – 170,000, with actual pay determined based on location, skills, experience, and other relevant considerations.
