Description

Our Burns & McDonnell Southwest region is looking for individuals with Protection and Controls Design experience to join our growing Substation Engineering team. This position will provide development and design services on 7.2kV-345kV protection and control projects for utility applications.

This role requires the ability to handle multiple projects of varying complexity and to prioritize work accordingly. This position will be responsible for the development of an array of challenging items including the drafting and design of engineering deliverables on complex utility Distribution and Substation design projects and requires interface with utility clients and collaboration across multiple offices. This opportunity will provide latitude for continued professional growth as a part of our established mentorship programs.

Duties

• Leading and supervising preparation of engineering deliverables for electric substation projects such as: • Electrical one-line drawings • Protection system architecture • Electrical network system architecture • Detailed physical layouts • Construction drawings • Programming

• Equipment and material selection and specification • Preparation of cost estimates and bills of material

• Control building design including AC and DC panels, batteries, and charger

• Bid and construction contract documents

• Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) upgrades and additions

• Switchgear bus work, recloser, and circuit breaker control and operation

• CT sizing and selection

• Relay panel design & wiring

Advanced comprehension of protective relay applications (SEL, GE, Basler, ABB)

Assignments may include but are not limited to: • Conduct assigned project work and coordinates with team members to ensure compliance with project schedules. • Makes design recommendations, adaptations, and modifications for electrical protection systems. • Performs calculations using engineering formulas and skills involved in the resolution of design problems, including performing field investigation or observation and detailed quality control and quality assurance (QCQA) review of design calculations. • Design facilities utilizing client standards. • Prepare equipment specifications. • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel.

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must have:

• Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program, and 3 years of electrical engineering experience consulting preferred. • Bachelor Degree in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of electrical engineering experience consulting preferred. • Master Degree in Electrical Engineering and 2 years of electrical engineering experience consulting preferred.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills. • Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures. • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite. • Strong computer skills include AutoCAD, MicroStation, 2D and 3D rendering programs, and other analysis programs. • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
