About the Agency

The Mississippi Public Utilities Staff ("MPUS" or "Staff") is an Executive Agency tasked with representing the broad interests of the State of Mississippi by balancing the respective concerns of the residential, commercial or industrial ratepayers, and the state and its agencies and departments, and the public utilities. The Staff serves three main functions: 1) advise the Public Service Commission in writing as to the broad public interest of the State of Mississippi, the using and consuming public, and the public utilities in all major rate cases and automatic adjustment clauses; 2) review and investigate the justness and reasonableness, to both the public and the public utility, of rates charged or proposed to be charged by any public utility; and 3) accumulate evidence and other information from public utilities and other sources as required by the Public Service Commission. About the Position

This is a non-state service X-16 position. This position is for a staff accountant in our Water and Wastewater Division. The Mississippi Public Utilities Staff seeks an accountant to support the Division Director in reviewing public utility filings and rate case filings. Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business and thorough understanding of financial statements and audit functions are required. Prior accounting experience strongly preferred. The Public Utility Staff is only interviewing accountants for this position. Two years full time work experience is required, but the experience does not have to be in accounting.

What youll need to be Successful

Ability to perform work in Excel. Ability to verify accounting entries by source documents.

Preferred Qualifications

Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree and 2-5 years of experience. Agency preferred qualifications: Accounting degree and experience, preferably 3+ years audit experience. Experience verifying accounting entries by source documents. Prior water and wastewater experience is a bonus.
