QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance with one or more years of recent accounting experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to effectively prioritize workload to meet deadlines, strong organizational and problem-solving skills.  
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, with a strong concentration in Excel spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of Great Plains accounting software is a plus.
  • Experience with association management platforms, Protech preferred. 
  • Highly organized self-starter with strong project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
  • Exempt, full-time position (in office at least four days a week and one day per week remote).

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to use a keyboard, mouse, and other standard office equipment.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 15 pounds occasionally (e.g., office supplies, meeting materials).
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Review general ledger accounts, perform account analysis and reconciliation.
  • Complete reconciliations for assigned asset and liability accounts, including cash, prepaids, accounts receivable, accounts payable and intercompany general ledger accounts.
  • Create spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel and upload monthly journal entries in Great Plains accounting software. 
  • Manage all aspects of membership invoicing, including invoice creation, distribution via mail and email, and utilization of members’ online platforms.
  • Communicate with members to address account inquiries and manage dues collection.
  • Ensure accurate tracking of dues collections through daily and weekly reconciliations and provide timely reporting to various departments.
  • Process daily cash receipts, including reviewing and recording dues payments into the membership system, running reports and accurate filing. 
  • Accounts payable function for TBC affiliates and subsidiaries; including research, coding, data entry, production of checks and accurate filing.
  • Assist in preparation for the annual audit.
  • Assist with yearly 1099 preparation.  
  • Follow accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements.
  • Support the CFO with special projects and workflow process improvements; any other duties as assigned by the CFO or Director of Finance.

The staff accountant will possess a comprehensive understanding of accounting processes, internal controls and have automated accounting system experience.  Reporting to the Director of Finance, the staff accountant will be a member of the finance team, lending support in the daily tasks necessary to produce monthly financial statements for The Business Council of New York State, Inc. (TBC), a 501(c)(6) organization and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
