Job Title: Sr Technician, Maintenance & Relief Operator

Job Description:

Primary Role

The Senior Technician, Maintenance Services performs skilled inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of mechanical and process equipment supporting water and/or wastewater treatment facilities and/or water booster stations. This role operates with minimal supervision and applies independent technical judgment to diagnose and resolve complex equipment issues. The Senior Technician, Maintenance Services serves as a technical resource for entry‑level technicians and contributes to preventive maintenance effectiveness, equipment reliability, and operational continuity.

Key Accountabilities

  • Independently troubleshoot, repair, overhaul, install, and commission pumps, blowers, motors, gearboxes, valves, chemical feed systems, mixers, screens, filters, and associated instrumentation.
  • Diagnose complex mechanical and process issues using drawings, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), manuals, historical maintenance data, and testing equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical issues related to control circuits and motor control systems using approved test equipment and procedures.
  • Perform advanced maintenance tasks such as precision alignment, seal and bearing replacement, vibration assessment, and system performance optimization.
  • Calibrate, adjust, and verify chemical feed systems and process instrumentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Execute preventive and corrective maintenance activities with limited oversight.
  • Identify equipment reliability issues and recommend corrective actions or maintenance improvements.
  • Support development and refinement of preventive maintenance procedures and schedules.
  • Strictly follow and reinforce safety procedures including lockout/tagout, confined space entry, electrical safety, and PPE use.
  • Complete work orders, inspections, and maintenance, ensuring documentation is accurately recorded in the CMMS.
  • Ensure work complies with regulatory, environmental, safety, and organizational standards. Respond to equipment failures, alarms, and emergency maintenance situations, including after‑hours and on‑call assignments.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with operations staff to minimize downtime and risk.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical systems used in water and wastewater treatment facilities, including pumps, blowers, motors, gearboxes, chemical feed systems, and process equipment.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems related to mechanical and process equipment.
  • Strong understanding of preventive and corrective maintenance practices and the relationship between equipment performance, reliability, and plant operations.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory, environmental, and safety requirements, including lockout/tagout, confined space entry, electrical safety, chemical handling, and use of PPE.
  • Knowledge of standard maintenance tools, diagnostic equipment, testing instruments, and maintenance documentation practices.
  • Effective quantitative and analytical skills; attention to detail.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate operational changes, equipment issues, and safety concerns.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with operations, maintenance, and external contractors.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, and process equipment issues using drawings, manuals, P&IDs, historical data, and test equipment.
  • Skill in performing advanced maintenance tasks such as precision alignment, seal and bearing replacement, vibration assessment, and calibration of chemical feed systems and process instrumentation.
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical manuals, electrical schematics, control system diagrams, and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). Effective computer skills for maintenance management or work order systems.
  • Skilled in prioritizing tasks during alarms, failures, or emergency conditions

Experience/Education

  • 2+ years' progressive mechanical or industrial maintenance experience servicing, maintaining, and repairing a wide variety of machinery and equipment.
  • Water, wastewater and/or utility experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Technical school coursework in industrial maintenance, mechanical systems, electrical systems, or a related field preferred

Travel Requirements

  • Daily travel within region may be required.
  • Position is M-F 7am to 330pm @ 275 Woollard Road Fayetteville, W.V. 25840.
  • Overtime, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and/or on-call assignments required depending on operational needs.

Other

  • Work performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to chemicals, odors, noise, and varying weather conditions.
  • Potential exposure to dust, pollen, chemicals, and sewage.
  • The ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment is required (PPE)
  • May be required to work in buildings, in pits, manholes, on scaffoldings or in confined spaces.
  • May be exposed to possible operations hazards including fumes and caustic chemicals, heavy machinery, high pressure, slippery surfaces, water/wastewater hazards and electrical equipment.
  • Must be able to perform essential functions and meet the physical requirements of the position including ability to stand, climb stairs, and/ or walk and/or sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, push, pull, and move tools, equipment, and materials up to 80 lbs. as required. Involves crouching, stooping, and kneeling for extended or repeated periods. Must be able to safely drive a company vehicle for extended or intermittent periods in varying conditions.
  • Frequently enters and exits vehicles.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid Driver's License.
  • CDL license is preferred.
  • Electrical experience preferred.
