Senior Professional Fee Specialty Coder –Orthopedics (Remote)

Location: Remote

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Professional Fee Specialty Coder –Orthopedics to support high-level coding operations in a remote healthcare environment. This role focuses on specialty and high-dollar account coding, ensuring accurate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT code assignment while maintaining exceptional coding quality and productivity standards.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in professional fee coding, orthopedic specialty coding, EMR systems, and physician documentation review. Candidates with orthopedic specialty certification are highly preferred.

This role collaborates closely with HIM teams, Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) specialists, and healthcare providers to support accurate reimbursement, compliance, and denial prevention initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Coding & Documentation Review
  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT codes based on clinical documentation and coding guidelines
  • Review coding-critical documentation and diagnostic results to support accurate reimbursement and DRG assignment
  • Maintain coding accuracy standards of 95% or greater
  • Abstract required patient and physician information into EMR systems accurately
  • Validate admission orders and discharge dispositions
  • Ensure compliance with official coding and reporting guidelines

Specialty Coding Operations
  • Work assigned coding queues and manage account workflows efficiently
  • Resolve ABS hold accounts and finalize corrections in a timely manner
  • Identify and appropriately report hospital-acquired conditions (HACs)
  • Participate in coding audits and compliance discussions
  • Assist with backend error reduction and process improvement initiatives

Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate with HIM and Clinical Documentation Improvement teams to clarify missing or incomplete documentation
  • Query providers for documentation clarification when needed
  • Maintain professional written and verbal communication across departments
  • Work independently in a remote environment with minimal supervision

Qualifications

Required Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

Preferred Education
  • Completion of:
    • AHIMA-approved Coding Certificate Program, or
    • Health Informatics / Health Information Management program

Required Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of coding experience required
  • Experience with:
    • EPIC EMR
    • Professional fee coding
    • ICD-10 and CPT coding

Preferred Experience
  • Orthopedic coding experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with specialty or high-dollar account coding preferred

Certifications
  • Orthopedic specialty certification through AAPC (COSC) strongly preferred
  • Certification verification must be included with submission

Technical & Professional Skills
  • Strong understanding of:
    • ICD-10-CM/PCS guidelines
    • CPT coding guidelines
    • Medical terminology and clinical documentation
    • Coding compliance and reimbursement standards
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Ability to meet productivity and quality benchmarks consistently
  • Comfortable working independently in a fully remote environment
