LOCATION: Peninsula Iron Works, Burgard Way, Portland OR,

ABOUT THE POSITION Under the direction of the General Manager and in cooperation with the Production Manager, safely perform a variety of tasks to correctly fabricate, weld, assemble, fit, and operate machines in the production process of heavy and large mechanical products, per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule, making independent decisions with minimal direct supervision given appropriate instructions.

Deliverables & Responsibilities

  • Safely fabricate, assemble, weld, fit, and install heavy industrial equipment in accordance with specifications, blueprints, and production schedules.
  • Read, interpret, and execute work accurately from blueprints, weld symbols, cut lists, and work instructions.
  • Perform advanced welding and fabrication duties including MIG, TIG, and stick welding in all required positions.
  • Inspect materials and finished products to ensure compliance with quality standards, safety requirements, and specifications.
  • Set up, operate, monitor, and adjust production machines and equipment for safe and efficient operation.
  • Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and material-handling equipment to move and assemble large components.
  • Maintain accurate production documentation, material transactions, inspections, and shipment records.
  • Support production planning by assisting with schedules, material readiness, and meeting delivery commitments.
  • Train and mentor associates in job duties, safety practices, documentation requirements, and lean principles.
  • Participate in continuous improvement, lean initiatives, SOP development, and process optimization while maintaining a safe, organized work area.

To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school or technical training preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Extensive experience in welding, fabrication, mechanical assembly, and machining processes.
  • Proven ability to read and accurately interpret blueprints, drawings, and weld symbols.
  • Proficiency in the use of hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and layout techniques.
  • Strong math skills including geometry, decimals, and metric conversions.
  • Ability to safely operate cranes, forklifts, and heavy equipment using proper PPE and lifting techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail with a consistent focus on quality, safety, and accuracy.
  • Effective verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
  • Dependable, adaptable, and capable of independent work with basic computer proficiency; prior leadership experience preferred.

Supervisor and Leadership Expectations

  • Serve as a technical and operational backup to the Production Manager and/or Production Leads.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance and informal leadership to team members.
  • Support workforce planning, scheduling, and changing production demands as needed.
  • Promote teamwork, clear communication, and employee engagement on the shop floor.
  • Encourage and support continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Model and enforce safety, quality, and housekeeping standards.
  • Assist in training and development of associates to improve skill levels and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve production or quality issues.
  • Support documentation, SOP adherence, and consistency of work practices.
  • Demonstrate readiness to assume expanded leadership responsibilities as business needs evolve.

WORK ENVIRONMENT Manufacturing Environment Shop manufacturing environment exposures include exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock. The employee may occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times consistent with an industrial assembly facility and may require hearing protection.
