Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Mechanical Infrastructure & Utility System Design

Develop and review designs for mechanical utility systems supporting cleanrooms and manufacturing spaces (e.g., HVAC, chilled water, CDA, vacuum, exhaust). Prepare and evaluate engineering documents including P&IDs, utility schematics, mechanical layouts, and design packages. Ensure designs comply with ISO cleanroom classifications, building codes, and internal engineering standards.

Lead and participate in design reviews with internal stakeholders and external engineering firms to validate system performance, constructability, and safety. Provide technical input early in project planning to define system requirements and align design strategies with operational needs.

Construction Engineering, Field Support & Commissioning

Provide on-site engineering support during construction, including system inspections, issue resolution, and verification of mechanical utility installations. Conduct site walks, field validations, and constructability assessments to ensure alignment with design intent and project specifications.

Coordinate mechanical-related construction activities, ensuring contractor readiness, quality execution, and adherence to project schedules. Develop and manage RFPs for mechanical utility scope, evaluate proposals, and ensure clear flow-down of technical requirements to subcontractors.

Track progress toward utility readiness milestones and proactively escalate risks or delays. Ensure design modifications and field changes are captured, communicated, and updated in project documentation.

Support system start-up, testing, commissioning, and turnover of new or upgraded mechanical infrastructure. Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, performance, and maintainability. Propose roadmaps and recommendations for long-term enhancements; and implement these.

Cross-Functional Coordination & Requirements Alignment

Partner with Project Management, Construction Management, EHS, Facilities, and Equipment Engineering teams to establish infrastructure requirements and confirm system designs meet operational and safety needs.

Collaborate with Equipment Installation teams to align utility availability with tool move-in, hookup, and qualification timelines. Represent mechanical utility engineering in cross-functional decision-making, schedule reviews, and site readiness discussions.

Communicate technical considerations, risks, and design impacts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Engineering Documentation, Standards & Compliance

Generate and maintain accurate mechanical engineering documentation including redlines, as-builts, system matrices, and specifications. Support development of preventive maintenance procedures and system handoff documentation for newly implemented utilities.

Ensure all mechanical designs and construction activities comply with applicable codes, safety requirements, and internal engineering standards. Contribute to standardization of mechanical utility design practices, documentation templates, and best practices across projects.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. In lieu of formal education, candidates with extensive hands-on experience in mechanical system design build, and operations will be considered.

9+ years of experience in mechanical design or project engineering within semiconductor, pharmaceutical, or other high-tech manufacturing environments. Demonstrated experience supporting cleanroom and mechanical utility infrastructure through design, construction, and commissioning phases.

Skills

Strong interpersonal, teaming, and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and support decision-making.

Proficiency in mechanical systems such as HVAC, chilled water, exhaust, and gas distribution. Ability to read, interpret, and develop engineering drawings, P&IDs, construction documents, and specifications.

Effective communication and collaboration across engineering, operations, and construction teams. Familiarity with project coordination and schedule tracking in an active construction environment.

Practical experience using design and drafting tools such as CAD, Bluebeam, and/or Revit/BIM. Comfortable operating in fast-paced environments with live construction activities and tight timelines.

Ability to support a 24/7 manufacturing site as needed. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (<5%).

Working Conditions

Requires movement between office areas, construction zones, cleanrooms, and manufacturing environments throughout the workday. Must be comfortable working indoors in cleanrooms and outdoors in utility areas with exposure to heat, noise, vibration, and varying weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform extended site walks and inspections, including navigating uneven surfaces and active construction sites. Must be able to:

Work inside Class 100/1000 cleanroom environments Wear required PPE (hard hats, safety glasses, cleanroom garments, etc.) and adhere to site safety protocols Work around chemicals, including acids and solids Work around hazardous and non-hazardous gases

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. Corporate EHS standards.

Quality and Environmental Responsibilities

Depending on location, this position may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of the ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and/or other applicable standards that may apply to the relevant roles and responsibilities within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
