Senior Manager, Payment and Coverage Policy

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, is seeking a full-time Senior Manager, Payment and Coverage Policy. In this highly visible role, you will advance the Academy's payment, coverage, and coding priorities by leading operational support for nutrition services policy initiatives, developing regulatory comments and member resources, and supporting the Academy's participation in the American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) processes. Reporting to the Director, Payment and Coverage Policy and working closely with Academy volunteer leaders, subject matter experts, and external stakeholders, you will conduct independent research, analyze evolving federal and commercial payer policies, evaluate coding and reimbursement issues, and develop strategic recommendations that strengthen provider recognition, improve access to nutrition services, reduce administrative burden, and support systems-level payment reform.
Responsibilities: As the Senior Manager, Payment and Coverage Policy, you will play a critical role in advancing the Academy's payment, coverage, coding, and reimbursement priorities. Responsibilities include: - Lead Regulatory and Federal Policy Initiatives by researching, analyzing, and drafting comments on proposed federal regulations, Requests for Information (RFIs), guidance documents, and other policy proposals affecting nutrition services coverage, payment, coding, reimbursement, and care delivery. Develop evidence-based recommendations that support the integration of registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) services into evolving healthcare delivery and payment models.
- Develop Member Resources and Educational Programs by creating practical tools, guidance documents, webinars, and training materials that help members navigate payment, coding, reimbursement, and practice operations. Coordinate reimbursement of office hours, support payment-focused communities of practice, and provide technical assistance to Academy members, volunteer leaders, and Nutrition Services Payment Specialists.
- Advance Payment and Coverage Advocacy by collaborating with Academy leaders, members, healthcare organizations, payers, and coalition partners to identify and address barriers to provider recognition, reimbursement, and patient access to nutrition services. Monitor emerging payment policies and develop strategic recommendations that support Academy advocacy priorities and payment reform initiatives.
- Support Coding, Valuation, and AMA CPT/RUC Activities by serving as the primary staff resource for the Academy's participation in the American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) processes. Research coding proposals, analyze clinical evidence and utilization data, prepare briefing materials and comment letters, coordinate volunteer participation, and support coding and valuation initiatives that strengthen reimbursement for nutrition services.
- Provide Strategic Project and Operational Leadership by supporting Academy committees, task forces, workgroups, and volunteer leaders engaged in payment, coverage, coding, reimbursement, and health policy initiatives. Coordinate cross-functional projects, facilitate stakeholder engagement, manage external consultants, develop executive briefing materials, and ensure payment and coverage initiatives align with the Academy's broader public policy and advocacy goals.
- Monitor Industry Trends and Provide Strategic Analysis by tracking legislative, regulatory, payer, and coding developments that impact nutrition services. Translate complex policy and reimbursement issues into actionable recommendations that improve provider recognition, reduce administrative burden, expand patient access to nutrition services, and advance the Academy's strategic objectives.
Requirements: - Bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, Health Policy, Health Administration, Public Health, Health Economics, Political Science, Healthcare Management, or a related field is required.
- Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential is preferred.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in healthcare payment policy, reimbursement, coding, health policy, healthcare administration, or a related field. Experience within a professional association, health plan, government agency, healthcare organization, or medical specialty society is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience with medical coding, reimbursement methodologies, healthcare payment systems, and coverage policy, preferably as they relate to nutrition services and healthcare delivery. Experience supporting AMA Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC), coding policy, reimbursement analysis, payer policy initiatives, or regulatory advocacy is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of federal and commercial payer policies, healthcare reimbursement methodologies, provider recognition issues, value-based care models, and regulatory processes affecting healthcare payment and coverage. Familiarity with CPT, HCPCS, Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial reimbursement policies is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, analyze complex technical, regulatory, and policy issues, synthesize clinical and reimbursement data, and develop clear, evidence-based recommendations for diverse audiences.
- Proven project management skills with the ability to independently manage multiple complex initiatives, prioritize competing deadlines, and successfully lead cross-functional projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex coding, reimbursement, and health policy concepts into practical guidance, educational resources, advocacy materials, and presentations.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with experience collaborating effectively with volunteer leaders, subject matter experts, consultants, coalition partners, healthcare organizations, government agencies, and other external stakeholders.
- Self-motivated, strategic, and detail-oriented professional with sound judgment, strong analytical and critical thinking skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams, with the ability to prepare professional reports, presentations, and briefing materials.

- This is a remote position with 10-15% travel required. Preference for candidates based in the Washington, D.C. area with the ability to attend in-person events and meetings.
About us:
The Academy offers a competitive starting salary range from $85,000 to $90,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience, as well as an excellent benefit package, including medical, dental, vision, LTD, tuition reimbursement and 401k match with IMMEDIATE VESTING!
